Objectives: To identify trends on nephrology research that focus on communication and to analyze the use of communication as a theme in research. Methods: A literature search of publications in Portuguese and Spanish from 1997 through 2007 that focused on communication or interaction with clients regarding feelings, emotions, and perceptions, was performed in the LILACS, SciELO, BDENF, and MEDLINE databases. The publications were grouped into three categories: communication, relationship/interaction, and feelings/emotions/perceptions. Results: The majority of the publications were related to the feelings, emotions, and perceptions of the clients. Professional/Client interaction emerged as a facilitating mechanism of the communication. Holistic and individualized care were identified as the most adequate modality of care. Conclusion: Identification and analysis of research on communication allowed the description of its main characteristics, its perspectives, and its potential to improve professional/client interactions during the delivery of care.

Objective To identify the clinical conditions and health care demand behavior of chronic kidney patients in the therapeutic itinerary for hemodialysis. Methods Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study based on an interview with ten patients at a renal replacement therapy clinic under hemodialysis treatment and analysis resulting from the use of the Collective Subject Discourse technique, by means of the software qualiquantisofty. Results The clinical conditions on the therapeutic itinerary evidenced symptoms of unease and the baseline disease profile identified included hypertensive nephrosclerosis, diabetic nephrosclerosis, undetermined cause and diabetic nephrosclerosis associated with arterial hypertension. The behaviors that negatively affected the health control were the delay to receive care in the health network, the non-acceptance of the disease and the treatment. Conclusion Few patients received early monitoring without any sign of symptoms. Nevertheless, the majority were hospitalized suddenly.

This paper describe teaching-learning experiences of senior nursing undergraduate students in providing care for clients on substitutive renal therapies in the nephrology service of a university hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The process was facilitated through a partnership between academic and clinical nursing public institutions. Structured interviews were used to evaluate the process during the second semester of 2008. Data led to the identification of the environmental factors, clients’ profile, and students’ nursing care. Evaluation of the experience indicated great interest and good performance of students, but there were limitations on fundamental knowledge to provide care for clients on renal substitutive therapies. Therefore, theory and practice are very relevant to provide quality care for clients on renal substitute therapies.
