ABSTRACT The research was conducted to investigate factors that facilita te users’ finding books by analyzing classifications in public library and bookstore. T his research was based on the assumption that the users’ needs and information behaviors are similar in both public library and bookstore. The main purpose of this study is not to recommend classifying public library collections the way a bookstore does, but to fig ure out what makes the users’ book finding more convenient by analyzing the classifications. To carry out the research, users’ book finding in public library and classifications of public library and bookstore are analyzed. Then, a survey was conducted to investigate users ’ book finding behaviors, degree of convenience in finding books according to different c lassifications and the causes of the convenience. The results of the research showed that boo kstore’s classification was more convenient for the users in finding books.키워드: 분류방식, 도서탐색, 공공도서관, 대형서점, 탐색행태, 탐색용이성classification, finding books, public library, bookstore, book finding behaviors

ABSTRACT This study aims to develop standard indicators and methodology for college & university libraries’evaluation based on the agreement among various stake-holders, then suggests a n ew evaluation system. For the goal, we identify purposes and required conditions, then develop indicators for the evaluation through open-ended interviews, a questionnaire survey, and focus group for reaching an agreement on the included indicators among the stake-holders, finally we construct the overall evaluation structure and weigh ting system. The overall structure is developed based on process-centered approach, then both the internal and functional viewpoint and external and service-oriented viewpoint are considered. The weighting system is based on the balance among the process categories, such as resources, process, and output elements. Additionally, we suggest methodol ogy for the evaluation and annual improvement process for ongoing improvement of the evaluation system. We expect tha t the results from this study will contribute not only to the evaluation activities but also to active discussion s on library performance and its predictor factors.키워드: 대학도서관평가, 과정 중심적 접근 , 성과, 평가과정, 평가도구개선Evaluation in College & University Libraries, Process-Centered Approach, Performance, Evaluation Process, Evaluation Tool Improvement

This study aims to explore measures to help establish a management direction and policies of local public libraries based on local residents` needs for library services based on the community characteristics. To that end, a community survey was conducted focusing on eight urbans (gus) and two rural districts (guns) in Incheon Metropolitan City. The districts were categorized into three types, original urban center (Area 1), new urban center (Area 2), and urban-rural complex (Area 3). The residents in each type were analyzed in terms of library use, awareness, needs, and satisfaction. In terms of library use, awareness, and satisfaction;we identified differences among the area types. This paper suggested management directions of local public libraries based on the community characteristics.

The categorization of libraries into several types supports an understanding of the concept of library and also provides a framework for the practice of library management, such as planning and management. Although a 4-type categorization with public, academic, special, and school libraries is the most traditional and general approach to categorization, the definition of each type has been set enumeratively and inductively, so that it has weaknesses in its clarity between categories and in its applicability to a new environment. In this conceptual paper, deductive and analytical criteria for the 4-type categorization are suggested based on characteristics of information needs. Implications of the suggestions about library management, and especially, the meaning and impact of stakeholders on library management are discussed. Additionally, this paper attempts to put forth a conceptual link between library and information.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of indexes by human and machine, and differences between them in terms of term identification in a full text environment. A back-of-book index and two indexes produced by two term identifiers (LinkIt and Termer) as pseudo-indexing systems for a whole body of a monograph are examined. In the investigation, the traditional contrast between manual and automatic indexing is confirmed in full text environment: manual index is for browsing and human use, and automatic index is for searching and machine use. The border between them. however, becomes vague. Some considerations for the use of the term identifiers for browsing and for searching are discussed, and further research for the use of the term identifier is suggested.

In previous studies, full-text analyses and mining techniques have not been combined to identify and trace changes in the knowledge trends of library science over the past 20 years (1997–2016). Thus, to grasp the knowledge trends of library science at a fine-grained level, this study analyzes full-text journal articles from six top-ranked library science journals by applying text-mining techniques such as co-word analysis, text summarization, and topic modeling. Visualization tools were used to map the knowledge structure of library science. The findings indicate that, during the past 20 years, library science has developed into an interdisciplinary knowledge structure that integrates librarianship topics with a range of other fields, generating major topics that include the academic library, the digital library, research methodology, library marketing, information retrieval, digital information, document citation, and so on. In the past ten years, the library science discipline has focused increasingly on research methodology and evaluation and become more concerned with digital information management.

ABSTRACT In this study, we develop a categorization of citizens’ informa tion problems in their everyday life based on the characteristics in their information seeking behavior for developing information services which support to solve the problems practically. First of all, we ext racted keywords related to their faced everyday life problems from the scripts of open-ended interviews with citizens who had diverse characteristics. The keywords were categorized into 6 groups, such as hobby/recr eation, legal problems, current affairs, education, health, and economic matters, based on the character istics in related information seeking behaviors. Then the 6-group categorization was tested statistic ally with questionnaire survey data based on their prefered information sources. Through the statistical test, the 6-group categorization has proved being valid. Based on the results, we suggested to reconsider t he current information services in public libraries, and discussed a possibility to shift the services to problem-based information services.키워드: 정보요구, 범주화, 시민, 일상정보추구, 정보문제중심Information Needs, Categorization, Citizen, ELIS (Everyday Life Information Seeking), Information Problem-Centered
