Despite the importance of the knowledge of serum reference values of mineralogram and proteinogram, there is a shortage of studies with goats in Brazil. The objective of this study was to determine and to compare the serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, total protein, albumin, globulin, and the albumin/globulin ratio in Parda Alpina goats at three different ages. Thirty Parda Alpina goats raised on an intensive system were utilized. They were divided into three groups: Group 1 - 10 young females (four months old); Group 2 - 10 young adult females (18 months old); Group 3 - 10 adult lactating females (24 to 60 months old). The mean values of calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium were 10.10± 1.70, 10.13± 2.04, 151± 3.30 and 5.16± 0.41 for G1, 10.36± 0.94, 7.49± 1.34, 145.9± 3.35 and 4.56± 0.48 for group 2 and 9.47± 1.45, 5.90± 1.21, 153.3± 5.17 and 4.20± 0.55 for G3. For total serum protein, albumin, globulin and the albumin/globulin rate the mean were 6.29± 0.94, 3.5± 10.41, 2.78± 0.95 and 1.40± 0.48, for G1, 7.27± 0.73, 4.92± 1.06, 3.06± 0.56, 1.43± 0.44 for group 2 and 7.14± 0.84, 3.70± 0.20, 3.44± 0.79 and 1.14± 0.30 for G3.The statistic analysis demonstrated influence of age on phosphorus, sodium, potassium, total protein and albumin.

Hematological changes during the pregnancy and parturition are of great importance in humans and have been studied in several species of domestic animals. The objective was to determine changes in erythrogram, iron metabolism and the serum concentration of erythropoietin in nuliparous female Saanen caprine during periods of pregnancy, parturition and postpartum. Blood samples were collected from 20 goats, clinically healthy, the 49 (M1), 42 (M2), 35 (M3), 28 (M4), 21 (M5), 14 (M6), seven (M7), three (M8) days in the pregnancy, parturition (M9), three (M10) and seven (M11) days postpartum for the erythrogram, plasma total protein and the serum of erythropoietin, iron, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation index and ferritin determination. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% level of significance (P<0,05). Significant difference (P<0,05) between a few moments for the variables, erythrocytes count, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, total plasma proteins, serum iron concentration, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation index (TSI) determination. There were no significant difference for the variables erythropoietin, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red cell distribution width (RDW) and ferritin. In conclusion, there was no stimulus for the increasing of the red blood cells production during the periods of pregnancy, parturition and postpartum in nuliparous Saanen goats. No clinical significance was observed in the in red blood cell count and in the iron metabolism.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pink pepper supplementation (PPS) in young goats concentrate diet on performance parameters. Twenty five female Saanen goats were divided into five groups having five goats in each treatment. In a completely randomized design were given 0%, 15%, 30%, 45% and 60% of pink pepper supplementation in the diet. The increase levels of pink pepper supplementation resulted in a quadratic effect on voluntary intake of dry matter, metabolic weight and daily weight gain (P≤0.05). For voluntary intake of dry matter, the quadratic effect (P≤0.05) revealed minimum point of 67.1 (g kg0.75 dia-1) in the percentage of 59.8% PPS; for metabolic weight a peak of 8. 5kg0.75 in the percentage of 15.5% PPS, and the daily weight gain a peak of 0.107g day-1 in the percentage of 19.6% PPS in the diet. Regarding the effect of PPS on the parasite load, there was a quadratic effect of dietary supplementation of the PPS on egg count per gram of feces (P≤0.05), with minimum point estimated at 1.0log10 at 35.8% of PPS in the diet, representing the limit of PPS response. There was a linear decrease on oocyst count per gram feces with increased levels of PPS s diet. It was concluded that the supplementation up to 20-30% of pink pepper was able to control of gastrointestinal parasites with maximum animal performance.

The Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (LEB) is a disease caused by a retrovirus, with cases reported in all the world and gradually spreads determining losses to Brazilian cattle. The objective of the study is defining the seroprevalence of LEB in cattle slaughtered in the city of Anchieta, Espírito Santo. 933 serum samples was collected in the slaughter line during the month of November 2013. The samples were examined by the immunodiffusion test in agar gel (IDGA) for the detection of specific antibodies against bovine leukosis virus (VLB). The test was performed following manufacturers instructions Tecpar ®. The prevalence detected was 21.86 %, 204 samples was soropositive for the LEB. The prevalence found in this study is lower than 39.8% found by Birgel Junior et al., (2006) with is the media of the southeast region. However, the prevalence is very expressive, showing that LEB is already widespread in the beef cattle in Espírito Santo, and that has total conditions to bring considerable losses to cattle in the state.

Adriana Borges Mendes; Giuliano Moraes Figueiró; Flávia de Almeida Lucas; Graziela Barioni

Low back pain is considered a major cause of lameness and performance decay, but identify the location of the lesions and quantify the intensity of pain is difficult because often the most obvious clinical sign, in some cases, is not the pain itself, but, low athletic performance. The diagnosis and treatment of this disease are associated with a high cost and have a strong impact on the equine industry, since it results in direct economic losses. The diagnosis of low back pain is made through physical examination and additional tests, including radiography, ultrasound, thermography and blockades. Major injuries causing back pain in horses is the contact or overlap of the spinous processes, supraspinous desmitis, osteoarthritis of the articular processes, vertebral body lesions and myositis. Therapeutic measures used in the treatment of these diseases are systemic inflammatory steroid, local infiltration, acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, changes in training and surgeries.

ABSTRACT.- Fonteque J.H., Saito M.E., Barioni G., Valente A.C.S., Takahira R.K. & Kohaya-gawa A. 2013. [ Leukocyte count and neutrophil oxidative burst in Saanen goats in the pregnancy, parturition and postpartum periods. ] Leucograma e metabolismo oxidativo de neutrofilos em cabras da raca Saanen nos periodos de gestacao, parto e pos-parto. Pes-quisa Veterinaria Brasileira 33(Supl.1):63-70 . Departamento de Medicina Veterinaria, Hos-pital de Clinicas Veterinarias, Centro de Ciencias Agroveterinarias, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, Lages, SC 88520-000, Brazil. E-mail: [email protected] purpose of this study was to evaluate the leukocyte count and the oxidative metab-olism of neutrophil in Saanen goats during periods of pregnancy, parturition and postpar-tum. Were used 20 Saanen goats, clinically healthy and serologically negative for caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV). Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture 49 (M1), 42 (M2), 35 (M3), 28 (M4), 21 (M5), 14 (M6), seven (M7), three (M8) days before the parturition, on the day of birth (M9), three (M10) and seven (M11) days postpartum, for the leukocyte count, and serum for cortisol, estradiol and progesterone determination. From 28 days (M4) before parturition until seven days postpartum (M11) blood samples were collected for evaluation of oxidative metabolism of neutrophils by the nitroblue tetrazolium reduction test (NBT). The results showed that at parturition day there were an increase in cortisol and estradiol levels and a decrease in progesterone serum, neu-trophilic leukocytosis and left shift slight, decrease of lymphocytes, increase in the neu-trophil: lymphocyte, eosinopenia, monocytosis and basophilia. There was a neutrophilic leukocytosis and an increase in the neutrophil: lymphocyte on the seventh day postpar-tum. There were not significant alterations in oxidative metabolism of neutrophils during pregnancy, parturition and postpartum. It was concluded that parturition causes an eleva-tion in cortisol and estradiol levels and a decrease in progesterone serum determining a neutrophilic leukocytosis and left shift slight, with a reduction of lymphocytes, increase in the neutrophil:lymphocyte, eosinopenia, monocytosis and basophilia. Neutrophilic leuko-cytosis, increase in the neutrophil: lymphocyte and fibrinogen are detected on the seventh day postpartum. Pregnancy, parturition and the postpartum do not change the oxidative metabolism of neutrophils evaluated by NBT reduction test.
