Humid Age Compression Set in High Resilience Polyurethane Foam

Gregory A. Campbell; Thomas J. Dearlove; William C. Meluch

As with any new technology, the development of high resiliency (HR) polyurethane seat form required the solution of several problems. They could be separated into processing changes which were discussed in a previous paper [1] and changes which related to the new chemistry of the HR system. It is the investigation of chemical changes in the foam which will be the subject of this paper. To aid in defining the chemical differences in the two foams, hot foam and HR foam, their components are described in Table 1. There were differ-

to produce processing difficulties. The early production was hampered by splits in the foam, surface flaws, and mold release complications that had not been experienced in earlier topper pad production. The associated problems required on-line alterations on both the foam chemistry and the production techniques that were, for a time, expensive and technically difficult. The decision to examine and develop cold cure foam was prompted by its potential superior seating quality when compared with hot cure foam. The basic cold cure foams have higher resilience which imparts a more plush feel. The high resilience, cold cure foams also exhibit better cold
