How knowledge flows in university-industry relations: An overview from two economic sectors in Brazil

Gustavo Dalmarco; Paulo Antônio Zawislak; Willem Hulsink; Flávio Régio Brambilla

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to characterize the knowledge flow between companies and universities based on national and sectoral systems of innovation perspective. It is argued here that high-tech sectors can describe a knowledge flow mainly based on scientific research, while sectors with lower technological impact may establish relations based on technical needs. Design/methodology/approach – A case study research was conducted in the horticulture and aerospace sectors in Brazil. Thirteen interviews were performed with chief executive officer’s and academic researchers from both fields. Findings – Results demonstrated differences in technology development and knowledge infrastructure when comparing both sectors, reflecting the impacts of national and sectoral systems of innovation. The horticulture sector presented technological limitations due to restricted eating habits, logistics, knowledge development at universities and difficulties on the establishment of partnerships between local comp...

The Effects of Hypergravity and Microgravity on Biomedical Experiments

Thais Russomano; Gustavo Dalmarco; Felipe Prehn Falcão

Abstract Take one elephant and one man to the top of a tower and simultaneously drop. Which will hit the ground first? You are a pilot of a jet fighter performing a high-speed loop. Will you pass out during the maneuver? How can you simulate being an astronaut with your feet still firmly placed on planet Earth? In the aerospace environment, human, animal, and plant physiology differs significantly from that on Earth, and this book provides reasons for some of these changes. The challenges encountered by pilots in their missions can have implications on the health and safety of not only themselves but others. Knowing the effects of hypergravity on the human body during high-speed flight led to the development of human centrifuges. We also need to better understand the physiological responses of living organisms in space. It is therefore necessary to simulate weightlessness through the use of specially adapted equipment, such as clinostats, tilt tables, and body suspension devices. Each of these ideas, and ...

Adoption of Industry 4.0 Technologies in Supply Chains

Gustavo Dalmarco; Ana Cristina Barros

The widespread use of internet is changing the way supply chain echelons interact with each other in order to respond to increasing customer requests of personalized products and services. Companies acquainted with the concept of industry 4.0 (i4.0) embrace the use of internet to improve their internal and external processes, delivering the dynamic and flexible response customers want. This chapter aims to discuss how supply chains may benefit from the adoption of i4.0 technologies by their partners and highlights some of its implementation challenges. Eight technologies cover most of i4.0 applications: additive manufacturing; big data & analytics; cloud computing; cyber-physical systems; cyber security; internet of things; collaborative robotics; and visual computing. At individual level, technologies such as additive manufacturing, collaborative robots, visual computing and cyber-physical systems establish the connectivity of a certain company. However, the integration of the whole supply chain, based on the principles of i4.0, demands that information provided by each company (Big Data) is shared through a collaborative system based on Cloud Computing and Internet of Things technologies. To safely share useful information, Cyber Security techniques must be implemented in individual systems and cloud solutions. Summing up, even though the adoption of i4.0 demands an individual initiative, it will only raise the supply chain’s competitive advantage if all companies adapt their manufacturing and supply chain processes. The main advantage foreseen here is based on an improved communication system of the whole supply chain, bringing consumers closer to the production process.

INOVAÇÃO E DESENVOLVIMENTO SUSTENTÁVEL: UMA ANÁLISE SISTEMÁTICA DA PRODUÇÃO CIENTÍFICA INTERNACIONAL

Lisilene Mello da Silveira; Gustavo Dalmarco; Maira Petrini; Daiane Mulling Neutzling

This research aims to map and analyze scientific publications related to innovation and sustainable development. A bibliometrics study among journals indexed at “Web of Science” database was performed. It was identified 116 scientific papers, written by 257 authors, who are enrolled to 166 institutions in 29 countries. The content analysis organized the articles in two groups: the most referred papers and the most recent relevant papers. The results show the growth in the number of paper published with the theme innovation and sustainable development, identifying which approach these two themes are being described and opportunities for future research. As a conclusion, terms as Green Innovation, Strategic Niche Management and Environmental Management, and others, were the main expressions identified by the themes Innovation and Sustainable Development. s pesquisas. Por fim, temas como Inovacao Verde, Gerenciamento de Nicho Estrategico e Gestao Ambiental, entre outros, foram os principais termos identificados pelos temas Inovacao e Desenvolvimento Sustentavel.

MANAGEMENT OF CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT (CRM) TECHNOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES IN BRAZIL: A B2B RELATIONSHIP IN THE SOFT-WARE-MEDIA DEVELOPMENT SECTOR

Flávio Régio Brambilla; Gustavo Dalmarco

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) represents a technological application based on the philosophy of Relationship Marketing and it recommends the interaction with high value consumers. Relating CRM to new social technologies, CRM 2.0 or social CRM deals with the relationship between companies and customers using online platforms such as blogs, RSS, forums and social network sites, among other facilities. Through a comparative study based on qualitative indicators, this article draws a relationship between CRM theory and practice. In two high technology organizations it was identified that, although the indicators are appropriate to the business practices, their usage and understanding are oriented by the nature of businesses and by the company characteristics. Empirical results show that technology structure, data collection and analysis tools and interactive sales tools favor CRM. In this paper, four variables are treated theoretically and empirically: Information Technology; Information tools, where the Database and the Storage of Debugged Data are included; Data Mining; and, the Sales Force Automation Facilities.
