Abstract Controlled potential reduction of immonium salts in the presence of bromo esters such as o -bromomethyl benzoates has afforded annellated products. The method is applicable to the synthesis of berbine alkaloids.

Abstract Electrochemical reduction of immonium salts in the presence of bromobenzylbromide derivatives gave 1-(bromobenzyl)-isoquinoline derivatives in moderate yields. This reaction is useful in the synthesis of several natural alkaloids as exemplified in the synthesis of Cularine.

A new, easy synthetic route to 2-hydroxy-3-methyl cyclopent-2-enone from 5-methylfurfuryl alcoho is described, in which the key intermediates are derivatives of 2,5-dimethoxy tetrahydrofuran prepared from the anodic oxidation of the corresponding derivatives of furan, followed by hydrogenation.
