This paper reports an aggregation-based method for the fabrication of composite Au/Ag nanoshells with tunable thickness and surface roughness. It is found that the resultant roughened composite Au/Ag nanoshells can attract each other spontaneously to form films at the air−water interface. Importantly, such films can be transferred onto the solid substrates without being destroyed and show excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement ability. Their strong enhancement ability may stem from the unique two-dimensional structure itself.

Excellent photoconductive properties have been found in Sb(2)O(3) nanobelts synthesized by a surfactant-assisted solvothermal method. Visible-light photodetectors have been designed from Sb(2)O(3) nanobelt networks using micrometer-wide gold wires as masks. Photodetectors show high sensitivity to visible light, high stability, and reproducibility. Fast response and decay times (<0.3 s) are comparable or even better than these parameters in many other metal oxide nanoscale photodetectors. The dominant mechanism of excellent photoconductivity is attributed to the barrier height modulations in the nanobelt-to-nanobelt contact regions. These results demonstrate that Sb(2)O(3) nanobelt networks can indeed serve as high-performance photodetectors in the visible light range.

Abstract Rare earth (Eu 3+ , Dy 3+ )-heteropolytungstate thin films were fabricated by self-assembly method successfully. The thin films give off strong fluorescence, which can be observed by eyes upon UV irradiation. The characteristic emission behaviors of the rare earth ions in self-assembled thin film were investigated compared with those of the corresponding solids. It is noticed that the intensity ratio between 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 and 5 D 0 → 7 F 1 of Eu 3+ and the intensity ratio between 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 13/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 15/2 of Dy 3+ in the self-assembled films are different from those of the corresponding solids. Furthermore, the self-assembled films present shorter fluorescence lifetimes than the corresponding solids. The reasons for these results have been discussed.

Luminescent hybrid Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of polyoxometaloeuropate (Na9EuW10O36) were successfully prepared. Low-angle X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that the LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The hybrid LB films can exhibit strong luminescence under UV irradiation, which can be observed by the human eye. The effect of the lipid ocradecylamine, on the luminescence of polyoxometaloeuropate was discussed and compared with that of the lipid dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide. It is found that the intensity ratio for the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition to the D-5(0) --> F-7(1) transition of europium in two kinds of LB films is quite different. The X-ray photoelectron spectra data verify that there exist different interactions between two lipids and the inorganic polyanions. The different interactions between two lipids and the polyanions may result in the distortion of the site symmetry for europium to a different extent, which may account for the difference in luminescent behavior between the two kinds of LB films.

In this work, we report the fabrication of high-quality (101)-oriented orthorhombic NaMnF(3) and (100)-oriented cubic KMnF(3) perovskites via an organic monolayer template at room temperature. The controlled crystallization under the organic monolayer template is explained in terms of the electrostatic interactions and beneficial lattice matching between the organic template and the ions undergoing nucleation. The present study is of great importance in the preparation of oriented perovskite materials as well as in the understanding of the mechanism for organic-template-directed crystallization.
