Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. limoneus is a Gram-positive, aerobic, aerial mycelial, spore-forming bacterium that was first isolated from a soil sample in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. We here report the complete genome of S. hygroscopicus subsp. limoneus KCTC 1717 (=KCCM 11405=IFO 12704=ATCC 21432), which consists of 10,537,932 bp (G+C content of 71.96%) with two linear chromosomes, 8983 protein-coding genes, 67 tRNAs and 6 rRNA operons. Genes related to biosynthesis of validamycin, valienamine and diverse secondary metabolites were detected in this genome. Genomic data is thus expected to considerably improve our understanding of how industrially important aminocyclitols are biosynthesized by microbial cells.

Roseateles depolymerans is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, flagellated, obligately aerobic, photosynthetic bacterium that was isolated from the Hanamuro River, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Here, we report the complete genome of R. depolymerans KCTC 42856(T) (=61A(T)=DSM 11813(T)=CCUG 48747(T)=NCIMB 13588(T)), which consists of 5,681,722bp (G+C content of 66.57%) with a single chromosome, 4,773 protein-coding genes, 57 tRNAs and 4 rRNA operons. Several genes related to degradation of aliphatic and aromatic polymers were detected in the genome that help explain how the strain mediates decomposition of biodegradable plastics into fragments which are then assimilated and subsequently metabolized by microbial cells.

Acinetobacter baumannii, a strictly aerobic, non-fermentative, Gram-negative coccobacillary rod-shaped bacterium, is an opportunistic pathogen in humans. We recently isolated a multidrug-resistant A. baumannii strain KBN10P02143 from the pus sample drawn from a surgical patient in South Korea. We report the complete genome of this strain, which consists of 4,139,396 bp (G + C content, 39.08%) with 3,868 protein-coding genes, 73 tRNAs and six rRNA operons. Identification of the genes related to multidrug resistance from this genome and the discovery of a novel conjugative plasmid will increase our understanding of the pathogenicity associated with this species.

A facultatively anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative, rod-shaped lactic acid bacterium, designated SG816T, was isolated from small intestine of a swine. Optimal growth occurred at 37 °C and pH 7.0. Furthermore, growth occurred in NaCl up to 0.5 % (w/v) but not at levels of salinity higher than 1 %. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectometry profiling showed that strain SG816T was closely related to Lactobacillus delbrueckiisubsp. bulgaricus KCTC 3635T (95.9 %) and Lactobacillus delbrueckiisubsp. indicus JCM 15610T (95.9 %), followed by other Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies (95.9-95.7 %) and Lactobacillus equicursoris DSM 19284T (95.6 %). A comparison of two housekeeping genes, RNA polymerase alpha subunit (rpoA) and phenylalanyl-tRNA synthase alpha subunit (pheS), revealed that strain SG816T formed a separate branch within the clade of the genus Lactobacillus. The DNA G+C content level of the strain SG816T was 51.5 mol%. The strain was homofermentative and produced d-lactic acid from glucose fermentation. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) of the isolate were C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0. The peptidoglycan type was A4α l-Lys-d-Asp. On the basis of distinct phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, strain SG816T represents a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus porci sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SG816T (=KCTC 21090T=NBRC 112917T).
