Performance improvement of wind energy conversion system using matrix converter

Haroon Ashfaq; Surendra Kumar Tripathi

For enhancing the power captured from the wind, the shaft speed need to be controlled. Power electronic converters are used to interface the induction generator with the grid and maximize the power captured from the wind. In this paper wind energy conversion system using the schemes based on back to back dual converter topology and the matrix converter topology are compared. Using the matrix converter, the terminal voltage and frequency of the induction generator can be controlled in such a way that the wind turbine is operating at its maximum power point for all wind velocities. The power factor at the interface with the grid is also controlled by the matrix converter to ensure purely active power injection into the grid for optimal utilization of the installed wind turbine capacity. Simulation results support the claims made on the advantages of the matrix converter scheme.

Optimized Load Profile & Cost Analysis of Stand-alone Photovoltaic System for Rural Power Applications in Indian Scenario

Kashif Javed; Haroon Ashfaq; Rajveer Singh

Abstract The energy demand across the world has increased in many decades due to the advancement of technology. A solar PV system can supply electrical power both in grid-connected and standalone mode. This paper presents an economic analysis of solar PV stand-alone systems for rural areas in India. Based on load profiles, a stand-alone system has been designed and simulated for rural areas of Jodhpur location. These systems are designed to provide solar electricity for small rural household using different load profiles. In this work, four types of load profiles are under consideration for the actual performance assessment of the system. Battery bank and PV modules size estimated for all load profiles under same environmental conditions. An optimized load profile is proposed and a standalone PV system designed to investigate its performance. The cost analysis shows that the optimized load profile type system is the most economical design for a standalone PV system.

A controller model for integration of hybrid energy system into the grid

Manaullah; Haroon Ashfaq; Ibrahim Imbayah Khalefah Imbayah

This paper introduces a controller model for the integration, of a wind system and photovoltaic system into the utility grid. The problem of integration of hybrid renewable energy based hybrid renewable energy generation system is that it relies heavily on weather conditions, PV and wind air speed. So, there is a necessity for developing control techniques for grid integration for such hybrid system, including a method for voltage and current control that stabilises the voltage and current. A PID control is developed in this work that is suitable for hybrid renewable energy system. Then, the system behaviour and performance are studied. For different weather conditions and fault condition systems, stability is also considered when there are change weather conditions in PV and air speed or a fault in the system. This paper advocates that the proposed PID controller gives a good performance. In this paper, solar energy is hybrid with wind energy. The developed MATLAB/SIMULINK design improves for integration of hybrid system performance and the results are presented.

A controllable off-grid hybrid power system

Haroon Ashfaq; Siddique Ahmad; Irfan

The global warming, air pollution and climate change are danger signals that all is not too well with environment. The main causes of these adverse effects are conventional energy generation. Renewable energy has great capacity to usher in universal energy access. Today, about 400 million people in India have no access to commercial electricity. Energy generations from renewable sources are the best solution for this type of problem. PV and wind energy has received overwhelming attention worldwide. This paper purposes an operation and control strategy for a renewable hybrid power system for an off grid operation We are analysing the data of wind and solar system and estimate the average energy by using hybrid power system with small storage system. In future we will be installing large solar and wind plant which are cheaper as compared to small plants. The Modelling and simulation of PV-wind hybrid system is done by MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Small signal analysis of current mode active-clamp ZVS dc-dc converters

Md. Masihuzzaman; Syed Khursheed Alam; Haroon Ashfaq

Active clamp technique has been proved to be an important topology for pulse width modulated (PWM) converters featuring zero voltage switching (ZVS). The small signal modeling and analysis of current mode controlled active clamp ZVS dc-dc converters are presented in this paper. It is identified that, damping due to lossless resistance inherent in active clamp topology is eliminated under uncompensated current mode control. The buck converter is considered to demonstrate the small signal modeling of current mode controlled active clamp ZVS dc-dc converters. The analysis is also extended to boost and buck-boost converters and the same can be extended to complete family of active clamp dc-dc converters. The small signal model of active clamp converter is compared with the hard switched converters. Simulation results for the active clamp buck converter are presented.
