Abstract The oils of Achillea coarctata Poir and Achillea oligocephala DC. were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The oil of A. coarctata Poir contained 1,8-cineole (20.1%), camphor (15.6%) and viridiflorol (11.8 %), while the oil of A. oligocephala DC. contained 1,8-cineole (18.6%), α-terpineol (6.8%) and linalool (6.0%) as major components.

Apart from a large amount (ca. 2.0%) of α-bisabolol β-D-fucopyranoside (2a), the aerial parts of the Mediterranean weed Carthamus glaucus afforded an unusual triglyceride (E-2-crotonyl-1,3-distearolylglycerol, 7), two lipophilic flavonoids (6a,b), and a series of bisabolane fucopyranosides variously acylated on the sugar moiety (2b-e) or oxidized on the terpenoid core (3, 4a,b, 5a,b). The fucopyranoside 2a is more soluble in polar media and more versatile in terms of formulation than its aglycone [(-)-α-bisabolol, 1], an anti-inflammatory cosmetic ingredient in current short supply in its natural form. A comparative investigation of the activity of α-bisabolol (1a), the fucopyranoside 2a, and its senecioate 2b on transcription factors involved in inflammation and cancer pathways (NF-κB and STAT-3) showed only marginal activity on NF-κB inhibition for all compounds, while STAT-3 was inhibited potently by the fucoside 2a and, to a lesser extent, also by α-bisabolol. These observations qualify 2a as an easily available compound, both as an apoptotic lead structure and as a potential alternative to natural α-bisabolol (1) for pharmaceutical and/or cosmetic development.

Abstract Water-distilled essential oil from aerial parts of Achillea pseudoaleppica, an endemic species in Turkey, was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Seventy components were characterized representing 92.4% of the total component in oil sample. The major components were camphor (29.1%), 1,8-cineole (17.7%) and artemisia ketone (10.3%).

Hypericum (Hypericaceae) species are extensively used in several fields such as traditional medicine, food and crop protection. Despite its usage in many fields, the identification of the genotoxic potential of this herb is still incomplete. In this study, we evaluated genotoxic effects of the petroleum ether, hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extract of Hypericum lysimachioides Boiss. var. lysimachioides by Ames Salmonella/microsome test and SOS chromotest. The mutagenic activity of Hypericum lysimachioides var. lysimachioides extracts was investigated by using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100 and also the SOS chromotest with Escherichia coli PQ37 strain, with or without S9 metabolic activation. In this initial report we demonstrated that all extracts of H. lysimachioides var. lysimachioides showed significant mutagenic activity on both strains of Salmonella either with or without S9 mixture. No mutagenicity was found in the SOS chromotest either with or without S9 mixture. These results indicate a significant mutagenicity of the petroleum ether, hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Hypericum lysimachioides var. lysimachioides in vitro. It can be suggested that quercetin and flavonol or their synergistic effects may be main mutagenic agents in the photopharmaceuticals Hypericum lysimachioides var. lysimachioides extract.

Bu calismanin amaci farki polariteye sahip cozucu serilerinden geciren Astragalus diphtherites var. diphtherites ( A. diphtherites ) ve Astragalus gymnalopecias ( A. gymnalopecias ) turlerinin govde ve kok kisimlarinin antioksidan ve antimikrobiyal ozelliklerinin arastirilmasidir. A ntioksidan ozellikleri belirlemek icin ozutlerin total fenolik, total flavonoid, DPPH, metal selatlama, indirgeme gucu ve hidroksi radikalini sondurme aktiviteleri test edildi. A. gymnalopecias ’in govde aseton ve metanol ozutlerinin Streptococcus pyogenes ’in buyumesi uzerinde inhibisyon etkisine sahip oldugu tespit edildi
