The aim of this work was to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal activities of novel d-amino acid-Schiff bases including fluorine atom and their Cr(III) and Ni(II) complexes. All these substances have been examined for antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains Listeria monocytogenes 4b ATCC19115, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC1280, Salmonella typhi H NCTC 901.8394, Brucella abortus (A.99, UK-1995) RSKK03026, Staphylococcus epidermis sp., Micrococus luteus ATCC9341, and Shigella dysenteriatyp 10 NCTC 9351, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans Y-1200-NIH, Tokyo. The antimicrobial test results of these amino acid-Schiff base complexes exhibited better activity than some known antibiotics. In particular, diamagnetic Ni(II) complexes were more potent bactericides than all of the substances synthesized.

A series of new compounds containing formyl and imine group were synthesized. New formyl-substituted compounds were prepared by the reaction of 1,2-bis(bromomethyl)benzene with benzaldehyde derivatives in the presence of NaOH. New bis-crown ether imine compounds were prepared by the condensation of corresponding aldehydes with 4′-aminobenzo-15-crown-5. Sodium complexes of the bis-crown ethers form crystalline 2:1 (Na+:ligand) stoichiometries were also been synthesized. The prepared compounds were structurally confirmed by analytical and spectral data and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. The results show that the antibacterial activity of compounds including o-methoxy group was significantly higher against S. epidermis compared to the other studied antimicrobial group.

An investigation of antimicrobial properties of 12 novel modified polymer derived from the condensation reaction of (aminomethyl)polystyrene and four substitute salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-fluoro-2 hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-fluoro-3-chloro-salicylaldehyde and 5-fluoro-3-methyl-salicylaldehyde) has been carried out and Cr(III) and Ni(II) complexes have been prepared. Modified polymers were characterized by magnetic susceptibility, elemental analyses, and spectral studies. The 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra analysis of the polymeric carbinolamine/azomethine were determined. In addition, surface morphology and composition were determined by SEM/EDX. Thermo gravimetric analyses of polymers were carried out in nitrogen atmosphere. Antibacterial activities of the polymers attached carbinolamine/azomethine and their complexes were studied by the well-diffusion method against Listeria monocytogenes 4b, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi H, Brucella abortus, Staphylococcus epidermis sp., Micrococcus luteus, Shigella dysenteria type 10, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas putida and antifungal activity against Candida albicans.

The present study is focused on evaluating the antimutagenic properties of Schiff bases and Mn(III) complexes with L-Threonine, L-Serine and L-Tyrosine, which have antimicrobial activity. These six compounds were investigated for antimutagenic properties against Aflatoxin Bı (AFBı) by the micronucleus (MN) assay in a human lymphocyte cell culture in vitro. The protective role of these compounds against AFBı-induced MN is probably related to its doses. A mechanism has been proposed to reduce the effect of AFBı.

A new amine containing selenium and their five imine, (SeSchX)(X: -H, F, Cl, Br, CH3), and Ni (II) complexes, [Ni(SeSchX)(H2O)2]Cl/[Ni(SeSchCl)(H2O)Cl], were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by means of elemental analyses, (13)C and (1)H NMR (for imine), FT-IR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, TGA/DTA and elemental analyses. [Ni(SeSchCl)(H2O)Cl] complex from Ni(II) complexes changes color from yellow to orange in the range pH 5-7. [Ni(SeSchCl)(H2O)Cl] complex has ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) transitions in the basic medium. Excitation characteristics and energetic of [Ni(SeSchCl)(H2O)Cl] complex, examined via TD-DFT calculations, reveals transitions of LMCT and π→π(*) character that matches the experimental values. [Ni(SeSchCl)(H2O)Cl] complex showed the highest antibacterial activity when compared to other complexes reported in this work.

Abstract Antimicrobial and antifungal polymers are gaining the attention of pharmaceutical makers and industrial design. Nanospheres-Polymers attached Platinum(II) / (IV) complexes have been synthesized to investigate antimicrobial activities. Firstly, nanospheres involving Schiff bases were synthesized from (aminomethyl) polystyrene and four substitute salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-fluoro-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-kloro-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 5-bromo-2-hydroxy benzaldehyde). Secondly, polymers attached Platinum(II) / (IV) complexes have been prepared by means of template method. The IR spectra show that the ligands act in a monovalent bidentate fashion all nanospheres involving Schiff bases. Square-planar and octahedral structures are proposed for Pt(II) and Pt(IV), respectively. All these substances have been examined for antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains, and antifungal activity. In particular, Pt(IV) complexes were more potent bactericides than all of the synthesized substances.
