Abstract Threonine Schiff base derived 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and threonine has been isolated and investigated. The stoichiometry of this compound was derived from the results of elemental analyses, IR, 1 H-NMR and UV spectroscopic techniques. X-ray diffraction method was also used to obtain the single-crystal structure. The compound crystallizes in the space group P 2 1 with cell dimensions a =5.109(2), b =11.334(2), c=11.155(3) A and β =91(3)° with Z =2. The molecule has phenol-imine tautomeric form in the crystal structure. Some of bond lengths and angles found in the molecular structure are distorted due to π-electron delocalization and steric effect of naphthylidene and threonine groups.

A new series of manganese(III) complexes of amino acid Schiff bases synthesized from 2‐hydroxy‐1‐naphthaldehyde and L‐serine, L‐methionine and L‐cystein. The structure of their metal complexes was investigated by elemental analyses, IR, TGA, magnetic susceptibility, and mass spectra. The structure of the N‐naphthylidene amino acid Schiff bases were determined by IR, UV, 1H NMR and mass spectra for a comparison with those of the complexes.

Abstract A new method is reported for the synthesis of manganese(III) acetate dihydrate from manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate, lead(IV) oxide and acetic acid as solvent. Melting point, mixed melting point with manganese(III) acetate dihydrate obtained by the well–known Christiensen method, elemental analyses, and potentiometric titration with a standard hydroquinone solution in acetic acid showed that the compound obtained by the new method was very pure (99.6%). In addition a solution of the compound in acetic acid was used to titrate potentiometrically some hydrazine derivatives and excellent results were obtained.

A new series of manganese(III) complexes Na[Mn(L1)2].3H2O, Na3[MnL2(CH3COO)4].2H2O, Na[Mn(L3)2].2H2O and amino acid Schiff bases (H2L1); [N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)tyrosine], (H2L2); [N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)arginine], (H2L3); [N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)lysine] have been prepared from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and a-amino acids (L-tyrosine, L-arginine, and L-lysine). The structures of the compounds were identified using elemental analyses, IR, UV-VIS, 1H-NMR spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). All of these substances have been also examined for antibacterial activity against the pathogenic strains S. aureus, Sh. dys. typ 7, L. monocytogenes 4b, E. coli, S. typhi H, S. epidermis, Br. abortus, M. luteus, B. cereus, P. putida, and antifungal activity against C. albicans.

The present study is focused on evaluating the antimutagenic properties of Schiff bases and Mn(III) complexes with L-Threonine, L-Serine and L-Tyrosine, which have antimicrobial activity. These six compounds were investigated for antimutagenic properties against Aflatoxin Bı (AFBı) by the micronucleus (MN) assay in a human lymphocyte cell culture in vitro. The protective role of these compounds against AFBı-induced MN is probably related to its doses. A mechanism has been proposed to reduce the effect of AFBı.

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the antimutagenic and antimicrobial activities of Schiff bases attached L-glutamine and L-asparagine. Antibacterial activities of the compounds against S. aureus, Sh. dys. typ 7, L. monocytogenes 4b, E. coli, S. typhi H, S. epidermis, Br. abortus, M. luteus, B. cereus, P. putida, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans were studied. These compounds were investigated for antimutagenic properties against Aflatoxin Bı (AFBı) using micronuclei (MN) assay in human lymphocyte cell culture in vitro. The protective role of these compounds against AFBı-induced MN is probably related to its doses.
