We report extraordinary effects in the transmission of sound through periodically perforated plates, supported by both measurements and theory. In agreement with recent observations in slit arrays, M. H. Lu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 174301 (2007)10.1103/PhysRevLett.99.174301], nearly full transmission is observed at certain resonant frequencies, pointing out similarities of the acoustic phenomena and their optical counterpart. However, acoustic screening well beyond that predicted by the mass law is achieved over a wide range of wavelengths in the vicinity of the period of the array, resulting in fundamentally unique behavior of the sound as compared to light.

We discuss the differences and similarities in the interaction of scalar and vector wave fields with particles and holes. Analytical results are provided for the transmission of isolated and arrayed small holes as well as surface modes in hole arrays for light, electrons and sound. In contrast to the optical case, small- hole arrays in perforated perfect screens cannot produce acoustic or electronic surface-bound states. However, unlike electrons and light, sound is transmitted through individual holes approximately in proportion to their area, regardless of their size. We discuss these issues with a systematic analysis that allows one to explore both common properties and unique behavior in wave phenomena for different material realizations.

We report on the key role of the acoustical impedance ratio between the solid and the host fluid in the transmission properties of slit arrays. Numerical calculations predict huge sound screening effects up to 60dB for low impedance ratio values. The screening band appears over a broad frequency region and is very robust against dissipative losses of the material as well as against the sound incident angle. This counterintuitive result is discussed in terms of the hydrodynamic short circuit, where thefluid and the solid at the radiating interface vibrate out of phase, resulting in a huge sound blocking effect.

Non-destructive methods are of great interest for the analysis of cultural heritage. Among the different possible techniques, this paper presents a low cost prototype based on the emission and reception of airborne ultrasound without direct contact with the test specimen. We successfully performed a method test for the detection of brick joints under a XVth century Renaissance fresco of the Metropolitan Cathedral of the city of Valencia (Spain). Both laboratory and in situ results are in agreement. Using this prototype system, an early moisture detection system has been installed in the dome that supports the fresco. The result is encouraging and opens interesting prospects for future research.

The radiation of sound by a periodically corrugated rigid piston is explored using theoretical and numerical approaches and compared with the radiation of flat rigid piston. The depth and the period of the corrugation are considered to be comparable with the wavelength in the surrounding fluid. Radiation enhancement is predicted due to cavity resonances and coherent diffraction. In addition, broad regions of low radiation efficiency are observed. Both effects could have an impact in acoustic transducers technology, either to increase the piston radiated power or to create a source of evanescent acoustic waves. The possibilities offered by this strategy in the nonlinear acoustic regime are also briefly discussed.

Theoretical results on sound transmission through plates perforated with compound periodic hole arrays are presented. Calculations are obtained by means of a model under the rigid-solid assumption, which is thoroughly derived. A complex interplay between resonant transmission peaks, resonance interference, and Wood anomaly minima is observed. At high frequencies the resonant peaks overcome the Wood anomaly dips, leading to a different behaviour when compared with simple hole arrays.

The ultrasonic transmission through plates perforated with 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 square array of subwavelength holes per unit cell are studied by numerical simulations. Calculations are obtained by means of a theoretical model under the rigid-solid assumption. It is demonstrated that when the inter-hole distance within the unit cell is reduced, new transmission dips appear resulting from Wood anomalies that have influence on the second and the third order Fabry-Perot peak. When the inter-hole distance within the unit cell is reduced, the transmission spectrum of the multiple-sublattice holes arrays tends to the transmission spectrum of a plate perforated with only one hole in the unit cell.

Numerical results obtained under the rigid-solid assumption are presented for compound arrays as a function of both parallel-to-plate wave-vector and frequency. Transmission minima arising from the interference between hole resonances interact with Wood anomalies. In addition, preliminary results on underwater ultrasound transmission measurements through a plate perforated with a rectangular hole array employing single point and synthetic aperture technique are presented.
