In many firms the value of purchased materials and components accounts for 50–80% of total cost of goods sold. For those firms, purchasing decisions cause enterprise wide side effects, and, therefore, should be treated as an integration matter. Supplier selection is a problem that deals with both qualitative and quantitative issues that must be measured using information that is normally spread within the enterprise. To see how this problem was addressed in a small construction company in Brazil, an integrated procurement process, which is a simplification of a more complex methodology, is presented. The case study shows the importance of simpler, yet efficient, solutions to address the decision making problems of smaller enterprises in development countries—a research and commercial niche not well developed yet.

Analytic Hierarchy Process is one of the most known multicriteria decision aid methods. Nevertheless, as it relies on decision makers (DM) pairwise comparisons, a problem may occur if some comparisons are not well done. This issue, known as inconsistency, appears when an inconsistency threshold is violated. One way to deal with inconsistency is to redo all judgments, as many times as needed, in order to reach acceptable levels. This work proposes a nonlinear programming model that reduces inconsistency to zero or near zero, without needing to redo all judgments. The reduction is achieved by adjusting the original judgments in a minimum way, keeping the DM’s decisions within a tolerable range. Only discrete values are generated, so the solution respects the limits of the Saaty scale (1–9). To illustrate the efficiency of the nonlinear model, a comparison between the proposed model and other models taken from recent literature was made. The results show that the proposed model performed better, since the original judgments were changed in a minimum way, also the inconsistency was completely removed. Alternatively, if some inconsistency is allowed more original judgments can be preserved.

The objective of this study is to map the Brazilian scientific production based on Brazilian journal publications on the implementation of Multicriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) to model Production Planning and Control problems. It consisted of 32 papers that were systematically selected from journals indexed in the Scielo database and also from a list of journals suggested by major Brazilian Industrial Engineering research societies. The results revealed, among other aspects, the journals that publish the most on this topic, the most often used MCDA methods in this interface, the production sectors in which the applications took place, and the most commonly discussed PPC topics. This paper also highlights the PPC aspects that need further research including MCDA methods.

This study describes an original multicriteria approach for classifying/ordering the quality of services given by companies using the measurement of customer satisfaction rate. Based on the combination of an MCDM methodology (ELECTRE III Method), with Quality tools statistical methods, this methodology presents special features which incorporates a scientific treatment into the subjectivity present in the procedure of evaluating the customer satisfaction rate - which differs from the other methods used in this context. This study also presents the results of an experiment to identify the difficulties found in the implementation of the methodology.

Purpose – This paper aims to present a literature review on models developed for the economic order quantity (EOQ) problem with incremental and all-units discounts, extending the work of Benton and Park (1996) which covered the most significant literature, from 1963 to 1994, about EOQ with discounts and that has identified four open areas in this field of study. The modeling of lot size with discounts wishes to give good solutions for realistic situations, such as those concerning the discounts offered by suppliers, to rises in the demand. Design/methodology/approach – The research was carried out in papers published from 1995 to 2013, and indexed in databases as Scopus and ISI Web of Science. The papers were compared through objective function, constraints, discounts, developed algorithms, allowance of shortages or multiproduct, demand pattern and buyer or buyer–supplier perspective. Findings – Results indicate two areas that still remain untouched, and probably the main cause is due to mathematical comp...

Information systems have evolved at a continual pace since administrations began to develop greater interest in production processes and supply chains. This created systems like Enterprise Resource Planning ERP, Material Requirements Planning MRP, and Manufacturing Resources Planning MRPII. This research discusses a literature search conducted to map the multicriteria models used to select ERP systems. As a result, this article proposes criteria and subcriteria to be used in the selection of ERP systems. The basic structure is developed around a tree and subcriteria tree that can be used as a checklist for companies wishing to acquire an ERP system.

Purpose In a view to its comprehensive and diverse applicability, the methodology Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has the potential to the generation of impacts on various aspects of an organization. This paper aims to carry out a systematic study of LSS impacts on organizations, analyzing their relation to organizational sustainability through the triple bottom line perspective. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of the existent literature on LSS was performed and the identified impacts were later classified as correspondence with three dimensions of organizational sustainability: financial, social and environmental. Findings There were identified 25 main impacts of the LSS through a systematic research of the literature. A greater correspondence of the LSS have been identified over a range of economic results in organizations; however, it was also possible to notice that the methodology has been directing its efforts gradually to meet further perspectives of sustainability, particularly by looking for a better relation with employees and customers. Practical implications The organizations that use the LSS as methodology to continuous improvement will be able to identify which impacts may need to be achieved primarily by the projects undertaken to enhance the achievement of a more sustainable management. Because of its comprehensive character, this paper can help organizations belonging to various industries and sectors of society. Originality/value Despite the growing number of published articles on the methodology LSS, it has not been identified articles that look for the study of the application of the methodology as a mechanism for increasing sustainability in organizations. Within the scenario presented, this study sought to assist the filling of this gap.
