Intersectorial linkages and key-sectors of the brazilian economy in the 2000s: a study about the sugar and alcohol industries

This research used the Input-Output Matrix to estimate the intersectorial linkages index and the Influence Field in order to analyze if the Sugar and Alcohol Industries comprise the main sectors of the Brazilian economy, named key-sectors. For this, the Rasmussen-Hirschman index, “relaxation” hypothesis, GHS index and the Influence Field, in 2000 and 2009. It was found that both Sugar Industry as the Alcohol Industry are not considered key-sectors of the economy, only the Sugar Industry has emerged as a key-sector in the “relaxation” hypothesis in 2000. In addition, both sectors have shown significant linkages in the position of applicants of inputs from other sectors of the economy, but had few linkages as suppliers of inputs. The sectors that relate to the Sugar and Alcohol Industries are Agriculture and Services (Trade; Transportation, storage and postal services; Financial intermediation and insurance; Business services; Maintenance services and repair, etc).
