Monitoring of Pesticide Residues in Herbal Medicines

We were carried out to monitor pesticide residues in herbal medicine. In Korea Pharmacy, these are no critics for pesticides except 5 kinds of organic chlorines (BHC, DDT, Aldrin, Endrin, Dieldrin) and heavy metals. We analysed 53 kinds of pesticides consisted of 14 kinds of organochlorines, 20 kinds of organophosphoruses, and 19 kinds of pesticides estimated endocrine disruptor on 373 samples consisted with 30kinds of herbal medicine. In this study, Domestic, Chinese and Japanese herbal medicines were tested with GC/ECD, GC/NPD and then confirmed with GC/MSD. Recoveries were 75l10% in ECD detector and 7697% in NPD detector. Detection limits were 0.0040.064ppm in ECD detector and 0.0060.094ppm in NPD detector. Organochlorines and others were not detected in samples.

A Study on the Characteristics of Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds in Gimhae

In this study, we measured volatile organic compounds in Gimhae city, South Korea. We selected twenty site and measured volatile organic compounds in ambient air by passive sampler when at sampling intervals of two month from April to December 2005. Passive sampler was exposed for fifteen day in ambient air. And samples were analyzed by GC/FID for volatile organic compounds. The results of each measured functional zone, mean concentration of each compound measured were generally higher the industrial complex area and traffic pollution area than residental area. Each area showed similar pattern for the observation period. concentration of measured each compound were the following order: winter > fall > spring > summer.

Odorous Compound Concentration Levels in Bon-San Industrial Area and Its Surrounding Regions

In this study, the characteristic of offensive major odorous compound from the Bon-San industrial complex in Gimhae were determined by analytical methods of Gas Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and UV/VIS Spectrophotometer. The kind of major odorous compounds examined acetaldehyde, sulfur compounds, ammonia and styrene. The concentration of all odorous compounds at 3 sampling points of industrial complex were lower than those of regulation standard levels of the industrial complex in Korea. The mean concentration of hydrogen sulfide was 0.0235 ppm at sampling point 2, it was higher than other sampling point. Complex odors was lower than regulation standard levels of the industrial complex in Korea.

A Study on the Micropollutants and Removal of Micropollutants Contained in Road Runoff

Micropollutants, which can be caused by imperfect combustion, are toxic chemical compound that flows into the river system after being contained in road runoff, a non-point source pollutant and accumulates in the body. The micropollutants that have characteristics such as toxicity, persistence, bio-accumulation, long-range transportation behave so similarly to micro particles that they can be removed by means of filtration or absorption. This study has examined the kinds and concentrations of micropollutants contained in deposited road particles. It has revealed that the kinds of micropollutants contained in the clarified supernatant liquid of deposited road particles are heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) composed of two or three benzene rings, including naphthalene and acenaphthalene. Their concentrations have been shown to be low, with 0.418 mg/L, 0.058 mg/L, 0.104 mg/L, 0.014 mg/L, 0.00075 mg/L for Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd, respectively and 0.00156 mg/L and 0.00184 mg/L for naphthalene and acenaphthalene.

Characteristics of Malodor Pollutants and Their Dispersion Measured in Several Industrial Source Regions in Yangsan

In this study, the environmental behavior of malodor pollutants (MPs: , , DMS, and DMDS) was investigated around areas influenced by strong anthropogenic processes based on observations and modeling study (a CALPUFF dispersion model). The MP emission concentrations were measured from 8 industrial source regions (tire plants (S1-S3), waste water disposal plant (S4), and oil refinery (S5) in an urban center area and paper mill/incineration plant (S6) and livestock feedlots (S7-S8) in Ungsang area) in Yangsan city during a fall period in 2008 (21 October 2008). Overall, the most MPs emitted from the urban center area were found to affect the malodor pollution in their downwind areas during early morning (06:00 LST) and nighttime (18:00 and 21:00 LST), compared with those in the Ungsang area. For malodor intensity, the most MPs in the urban center area (especially S1 and S2) were found to be a significant contributor, whereas and in the Ungsnag area (especially S6) were the dominant contributor. The model study showed agreement in the spatial distributions of simulated MPs with those of the observations. The largest impact of MPs in the urban center area on the malodor pollution in its residential areas occurred at S1, S2, and S3 sites during nighttime, while that of MPs in the Ungsang area occurred at S6 and S8 sites. This may be caused mainly by the high MP emissions and in part by wind conditions (prevailing northeasterly winds with low wind speeds of 2-3 m/s).

Determination of Simultaneous Analytical Method of Residual Pesticides by Gas Chromatography

Abstract The simultaneous determination of residual pesticides was developed using a gas chromatography. In thisstudy, a simple and reliable methodology was improved to detect 175 kinds of residual pesticides by a liq-uid-liquid extraction procedure, followed by chromatographic analysis by gas chromatography. The 175 kindsof residual pesticides was classified into 4 groups according to the chemical structure, column type, resolutionand sensitivity. The soybean sample selected for recovery experiment was not detected any pesticides. Therecovery rates were ranged from 70.6% to 119.7% in most pesticides. The relative standard deviation (RSD0.3~5.6%) was lower than 5.6% in all cases. The limits of detection (LOD) was lower than the maximumresidue levels established by Korean legislations.
