Given the growing need for high-speed access networks with reliable service delivery and lifeline support, fiber-based access rapidly becomes the prevailing solution around the world. Ethernet passive optical network addresses the environmental impact of fiber access through advanced power-saving mechanisms, which reduce the power consumption of customer equipment while preserving customer experience.

PON (Passive Optical Network) permits the economical deployment of FTTH (Fiber to the Home) networks by sharing a single optical subscriber line among multiple subscribers. Especially since 2002, the deployment of PON systems has grown rapidly. This paper introduces the current status of FTTH in Japan then proposes a redundant optical access system with APS (Automatic Protection Switching) over PON which enables PONs for FTTBus (Fiber to the Business).

Feature Issue on Passive Optical Network Architectures and TechnologiesIn the passive optical network (PON) system, the optical line terminal (OLT) assigns bandwidth to each optical network unit (ONU) in accordance with the traffic condition at an ONU. The OLT needs to predict the remote ONUs required bandwidth. We give consideration about the error margin in the bandwidth prediction, and point out a problem in the future high-bit-rate PON and propose an enhanced queue status reporting method.

A passive optical network (PON) protection scheme is needed to ensure the system reliability required for business use, as PON is based on sharing a single fiber via an optical distribution network. Protection switching time is an important factor for business applications because it defines the service outage duration when a failure occurs. In this paper, we propose a PON protection scheme that enables the service outage duration to be reduced. We demonstrate Type B protection for a time and wavelength division multiplexed PON system and discuss the service outage duration.

In this paper, a fast wavelength switching protocol to deal with the RTT drift problem in WDM/TDM-EPON system is proposed. Estimated process time revealed one sixth reduction of the switching time can be available.

Hitless protection is important for outage-free video streaming services. In this paper, we demonstrate multicast video streaming using a hitless 10G-EPON based N:1 protection scheme with a 2.5 Gbps (20 Mbps × 128 chs) downstream traffic load.

In future, various optical access systems will be deployed depending on the required data transmission capacity. For smooth migration, generic network management scheme is desired. In this paper, generic remote ONU management scheme by adopting the virtualization of logical channel in various optical access systems is described.
