Mapping of Power Transmission Lines on Malaysian Highways Using UPM-APSB’s AISA Airborne Hyperspectral Imaging System

Hj. Kamaruzaman Jusoff; Norsuzila Ya’acob

Power transmission lines routes mapping is an important technique for locating power transmission line routes and towers on mountain/hilltops to assist viewing of their impacts on the environment, operations and allocation of public utilities. A study was therefore conducted to map the power transmission lines within Bukit Lanjan PLUS highway. The main objective of this study is to assess the capability of airborne hyperspectral sensing for mapping of power transmission. By using ENVI software, the airborne hyperspectral imaging data was enhanced using convolution filtering technique using band 3 which produced a gray scale image which appeared clearer and sharper. The spectral reflectance curves were acquired for each power line which showed the same spectrum characteristics in curve or the reflectance energy. This is because of the same power lines composition material for all power lines. Ground verification was done by comparing the UPM-APSB’s AISA Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates readings with ground GPS coordinates readings of the power transmission lines footings. The ground verification result from the two matching power transmission line footings showed that the accuracy of power lines identification was acceptable. This study implies that airborne hyperspectral imagers are powerful tools for mapping and spotting of suitable large transmission towers and lines.

Developing a Secure Web Application Using OWASP Guidelines

Khairul Anwar Sedek; Norlis Osman; Mohd Nizam Osman; Hj. Kamaruzaman Jusoff

Developing a secure Web application is very difficult task. Therefore developers need a guideline to help them to develop a secure Web application. Guideline can be used as a checklist for developer to achieve minimum standard of secure Web application. This study evaluates how good is OWASP guideline in helping developer to build secure Web application. The developed system is then tested using code auditing and penetration testing to identify the achievement of the system security for the application. After applying the testing techniques from Open Source Security Testing Methodology (OSSTMM) on the Top Ten Critical vulnerabilities as defined by OWASP, a standard measure score are calculated. The score is used to decide on the level of security of the developed web application. A high percentage score would indicate that the guideline helps in building a secured web application. Hence, the result proved that OWASP guideline is effective in ensuring the trustworthiness of the system and can be used as referral by other web developer especially in developing applications for a university.

Leveraging an Open Source VPN Technology to End User

Farok Azmat; Ikhwan Hamdan; Hj. Kamaruzaman Jusoff

Virtual Private Network (VPN) can be implemented by corporate and public user in a few methods. The methods included proprietary or open source solutions. It has shown great potential due to its encrypted traffic flow which gives it a secure environment. With a good reception of internet in Malaysia it is unfortunate that the major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have imposed packet filtering. In effect they have throttled the fast broadband to become a slow medium. As a result it gives a disadvantage to active end user. To overcome an ISP packet filtering which slows down internet traffic, this paper intends to study and provide a sample of VPN solution service to end user to improve the current problem.

E-learning in the educational world has grown and changed rapidly in recent years. Both private and public sector organizations have embraced the practice of reaching their students at a distance via new technologies afforded them by Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure. E-learning is grounded on technology, and without it, its practice would be difficult, if not impossible. We can see that the use of the internet and ICT are becoming an important part of learning and teaching strategies in many educational institutions. Knowing that education has always been an important engine for economic development, the Malaysian government has taken initiative steps to implement public awareness on the ICT issues. An important part of e-learning has been to contribute to the development of individual learners whatever their life circumstances. E-learning as a field of educational endeavor is at a crucial juncture in its historical development. The notion of learning at a distance has gained wide acceptance across the developed world. Instructors, physically and temporally separated from learners using newly emerging information and communication technologies, are widespread. The potential of latest technology has adopted in creating new learning environments. The rational behind this endeavor is the expectation that unique features of the Information Communication technology. It also can include a range of powerful media forms and its interactive capability that support sophisticated range and interaction in teaching. As a result, these approaches will provide a rich environment for teaching.
