Nurses' conception of patients' family participation in any psychiatric set up: Important facts

Srijit Das; Ho Siew Eng

We read with much interest the recently-published article titled ‘ “Family in the waiting room”: A Swedish study of nurses’ conceptions of family participation in acute psychiatric inpatient settings’ by Blomqvist and Ziegert (2011). The authors have chosen an important topic that describes the way nurses experience the patients’ family participation in acute psychiatric inpatient settings. Interestingly, a recent study by Bazzana et al. (2011) stressed the importance of ‘health workers’ perception and representation of cognitive and emotional needs of the patients’. The same study, which consisted of nine medical doctors and two nursing staff, also highlighted the reactivity of the patients according to sex. Thus, an important fact is the interaction of any male family member with the female nursing staff conducting any such interview. Interestingly, this interaction of opposite sexes during any interview could influence the results of the study. We believe that the age of nursing staff could play an important role in the perception of any psychiatric feeling. The authors have been efficient in mentioning the mean length of time of the involved nurses with their profession. The increase in age, experience, maturity, and years of involvement in psychiatry clinics could certainly mean a better understanding of any family member’s feelings. It is pertinent to mention that the education of the family plays an important role in the expression of any feelings, and the authors have rightly described this. The authors have expressed such facts diligently. It is not only the family educational background, but also the prevailing circumstances in the family that might also influence feelings at a particular time. For family members of a patient with terminal illness, adherence might be a big factor. Some individuals might even lack good communications skills. Does that mean that the family members can also express their feelings effectively only if they have good communications skills? We congratulate the editor and authors for publishing such informative articles that might improve patient care.

RESULTS FROM AN INTERNATIONAL MULTICENTRE DOUBLE-BLIND RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL ON THE PERIOPERATIVE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF BIPOLAR VS MONOPOLAR TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF THE PROSTATE

Christopher Chee Kong Ho; Ho Siew Eng; Srijit Das

Sir, Recent case series describe infectious complications after TRUS-guided prostate biopsy due to extended-spectrum β -lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli . However, few studies have specifi cally evaluated potential risk factors for postbiopsy isolation of ESBL-producing E. coli . We read with interest the timely article by Patel et al . [ 1 ] describing the association between recent international travel and post-biopsy infections with multi-resistant E. coli .
