The Generic Design of a High-Traffic Advanced Metering Infrastructure Using ZigBee

Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; Kwok Tai Chui; Hoi Ching Tung; Hao Ran Chi; Gerhard P. Hancke; Kim-Fung Man

A multi-interface ZigBee building area network (MIZBAN) for a high-traffic advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for high-rise buildings was developed. This supports meter management functions such as Demand Response for smart grid applications. To cater for the high-traffic communication in these building area networks (BANs), a multi-interface management framework was defined and designed to coordinate the operation between multiple interfaces based on a newly defined tree-based mesh (T-Mesh) ZigBee topology, which supports both mesh and tree routing in a single network. To evaluate MIZBAN, an experiment was set up in a five-floor building. Based on the measured data, simulations were performed to extend the analysis to a 23-floor building. These revealed that MIZBAN yields an improvement in application-layer latency of the backbone and the floor network by 75% and 67%, respectively. This paper provides the design engineer with seven recommendations for a generic MIZBAN design, which will fulfill the requirement for demand response by the U.S. government, i.e. a latency of less than 0.25 s.

ZigBee sensor network for Advanced Metering infrastructure

Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; Ka Lun Lam

A ZigBee Advance Metering infrastructure (ZAMI) is proposed for automatic meter data collection and energy auditing and management. In the ZAMI, the system operates with multiple channels and frequency hopping and coexists with potential interferers. By incorporating dual channels, the delay is improved by 30% to 50%.

This paper presents a ZigBee In-Patient Monitoring system embedded with a new ZigBee mobility management solution. The system enables ZigBee device mobility in a fixed ZigBee network. The usage, the architecture and the mobility framework are discussed in details in the paper. The evaluation shows that the new algorithm offers a good efficiency, resulting in a low management cost. In addition, the system can save lives by providing a panic button and can be used as a location tracking service. A case study focused on the Princes of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong is presented and findings are given. This investigation reveals that the developed mobile solutions offer promising value-added services for many potential ZigBee applications.

This paper presents a Information system for ZigBee Energy Dispenser (ZED), with onsite Charging Hotspot subsystem (Z-key, Z-Charger and Data Hub) and backend Web portals subsystem (i-Plug), over wireless transmission by using ZigBee module and wired transmission on internet network. ZED is an AMI solution dedicated to electrical vehicle charging for both private and public car parks. It is a platform which aimed to coordinate the data flow among customer, Utility information system (e.g MDMS, billing) and Charging Hotspot.

WiMAX telemedicine system for emergence medical service

K. L. Lam; Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; King-Tim Ko

The conviction of “the golden first hour” and “the platinum ten minutes” has been the model professional standard of emergency medical assistance. However, in many countries, the medical services are not up to the standard. A telemedicine system, based on WiMAX wireless technology, is proposed for emergency medical assistance and to implement in the ambulance. The system is specially designed for improving efficiency of emergency service thus reaching the standard. Since WiMAX provides broadband access and high data rate, it caters for the most adverse condition demanding good latency and high bandwidth. The OFDM nature of WiMAX also equips itself the best candidate to combat channel fading, thus offering high mobility. Moreover, as WiMAX delivers high power and good sensitivity, citywide coverage can be provided. Therefore it is an excellent technology for life saving applications in a travelling ambulance. The incentive to enhance the efficiency is brought by the mobility and broadband access. The proposed system improves efficiency in a number of ways. This paper will further present the possibilities to shorten the emergency period and arrange medical treatment prior to the arrival at hospital. Invaluable lives can be saved by keeping the standard of “the platinum ten minutes” in first aid. Besides, early treatment is the key to a cure, such a system should bring about a revolutionary reform for the medical systems and will reduce the medical insurance significantly.

ZigBee WiMAX nursery system for patient monitoring

Ka Lun Lam; King-Tim Ko; Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang

This paper has proposed a remote nursery monitoring system (RMNS) which combines ZigBee and WiMAX network. Within small-range area, ZigBee mesh network are established and medical devices embedded ZigBee module get access into the network. Through ZigBee network, the typical physical parameters are gathered in health information center (e.g. laptop and PDA) for doctors to monitor and control. To extend the coverage of the system, the hybrid infrastructure is developed by integrating wireless broadband access-WiMAX, which is good at transmitting signal in a long range no matter line of sight (LOS)or none line of sight (NLOS). Therefore, the reliability of the whole monitoring system is guaranteed. For people live in remote area, they can also be accommodated in the proposed RMNS system. Moreover, medical staffs are allowed to reserve their time for dealing with emergency issues.

Hybrid energy management solution for smart building

H. C. Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; L.L. Lai; K. L. Lam; Hoi Yan Tung

In recent decades, energy management concept is urgently needed to rescue our world from submersion. In this paper, an energy management solution is proposed for adoption in infrastructure and public facilities. Large scale adoption should save energy more efficiently and is a model of the general public. The system uses ZigBee and Power Line Communication as transmission medium which significantly lower the installation cost. The detail of the system is described including the system overview, architecture as well as performance evaluation.

Zigbee automatic meter reading system - beeline of metering

Ka Lun Lam; Hoi Yan Tung; Lap To Lee; Kim Fung Tsang

To improve the efficiency and accuracy of metering, automatic meter reading (AMR) system has been discussed and used for a long time. AMR is the technology of automatically collecting data from water meter or energy metering devices (water, gas, electricity) and transferring the data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing. This means that billing can be based on actual consumption rather than an estimate based on previous consumption, giving customers a better control of their use of electric energy, gas usage, or water consumption. In this paper, a ZigBee AMR system called beeline of metering (BeMe) is described.

A zero configured HomeCare gateway using ZigBee

Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; K. L. Lam; H. C. Tung

This paper presents a zero configuration HomeCare gateway which enables the remote patient monitoring. The proposed solution facilitates the automatic service discovery from ZigBee medical sensor network and also the doctor could adjust the monitoring configuration by uploading a new service profile to telemedical platform. It is believe that the proposed solution could achieve win-win situation for both patient and doctor.

Service management for convergent automation network supporting health and sustainable applications

Hoi Yan Tung; K. L. Lam; Gerhard P. Hancke; C. C. Lee

The convergence of smart energy system, telemedicine system and smart home/building solution will be the future development focus of next generation building and home automation system. This paper discusses the impact of the convergence on WiMAX development in terms of QoS management and network design. A performance evaluation has been also conduct to visualize the impact and promising result has been found. This confirms that the current WiMAX standard service class definitions and QoS management framework can fulfill the future development of WiMAX convergent automation network after slight modification.
