ZigBee sensor network for Advanced Metering infrastructure

Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; Ka Lun Lam

A ZigBee Advance Metering infrastructure (ZAMI) is proposed for automatic meter data collection and energy auditing and management. In the ZAMI, the system operates with multiple channels and frequency hopping and coexists with potential interferers. By incorporating dual channels, the delay is improved by 30% to 50%.

This paper presents a ZigBee In-Patient Monitoring system embedded with a new ZigBee mobility management solution. The system enables ZigBee device mobility in a fixed ZigBee network. The usage, the architecture and the mobility framework are discussed in details in the paper. The evaluation shows that the new algorithm offers a good efficiency, resulting in a low management cost. In addition, the system can save lives by providing a panic button and can be used as a location tracking service. A case study focused on the Princes of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong is presented and findings are given. This investigation reveals that the developed mobile solutions offer promising value-added services for many potential ZigBee applications.

ZigBee WiMAX nursery system for patient monitoring

Ka Lun Lam; King-Tim Ko; Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang

This paper has proposed a remote nursery monitoring system (RMNS) which combines ZigBee and WiMAX network. Within small-range area, ZigBee mesh network are established and medical devices embedded ZigBee module get access into the network. Through ZigBee network, the typical physical parameters are gathered in health information center (e.g. laptop and PDA) for doctors to monitor and control. To extend the coverage of the system, the hybrid infrastructure is developed by integrating wireless broadband access-WiMAX, which is good at transmitting signal in a long range no matter line of sight (LOS)or none line of sight (NLOS). Therefore, the reliability of the whole monitoring system is guaranteed. For people live in remote area, they can also be accommodated in the proposed RMNS system. Moreover, medical staffs are allowed to reserve their time for dealing with emergency issues.

Zigbee automatic meter reading system - beeline of metering

Ka Lun Lam; Hoi Yan Tung; Lap To Lee; Kim Fung Tsang

To improve the efficiency and accuracy of metering, automatic meter reading (AMR) system has been discussed and used for a long time. AMR is the technology of automatically collecting data from water meter or energy metering devices (water, gas, electricity) and transferring the data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing. This means that billing can be based on actual consumption rather than an estimate based on previous consumption, giving customers a better control of their use of electric energy, gas usage, or water consumption. In this paper, a ZigBee AMR system called beeline of metering (BeMe) is described.

A reliable and adequate communication network is crucial for smart grid applications. It is important to evaluate the performance of network infrastructure with respect to the diverse requirements imposed by various smart grid applications to ensure system reliability. Due to the complex dynamics involving communication and electrical systems, analytical study on smart grid faces challenges. As a result, comprehensive simulation platforms are needed for the study of interdependency between the heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we discuss the design of our smart grid co-simulation platform which combines power system simulator PSCAD/EMTDC with network simulator OPNET. In addition, we report a case study on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) voltage support application with respect to WiMAX / WiFi vehicle-to-infrastructure scenarios.

WiMAX-ZigBee management system for green education

Ka Lun Lam; Lap To Lee; Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang

A WiMAX-ZigBee management system for green education has been developed. The developed energy management system brings about an end to the disgusting environmental problems. This paper explores the concept of energy management and introduces an Energy Management System located at campus areas. Analysis shows that 30% energy can be saved from the total energy consumption which saves HK

On the Handover Performance of a Tri-threshold Bandwidth Reservation CAC Scheme

Hoi Yan Tung; Kim Fung Tsang; Lap To Lee; Ka Lun Lam; Yu Ting Sun; Shiu Keung Ronald Kwan; Sammy Chan

An adaptive tri-threshold dynamic call admission control scheme for wideband mobile cellular networks is proposed. The relationship between the Channel Utilization and the Weighted Handover Dropping Probability versus traffic loadings are investigated. This scheme supports voice, data and multimedia services with differentiated QoS.
