A new S-type of wideband erbium-ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass waveguide amplifier integrated with medium thin film filter is proposed, this S-type geometry waveguide structure is used to achieve a long path in a compact chip, and obtained higher gain with lower Er-doped concentration, and the medium thin film filter is utilized to achieve the built-in suppression of 1.53pm gain peak to obtain larger flattening gain bandwidth. The intrinsical gain spectrum is obtained by solving rate and power propagation equations, the effect of transmittance spectrum of thin film filter on flattening gain is discussed.

A split step finite difference (SSFD) algorithm based on the Crank-Nicholson implicit scheme for high-energy pulse propagation in long-distance optical fibers is presented. The big difference from the conventional finite difference (FD) is that SSFDs do not directly discretize the second nonlinear effects terms of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). The numerical results illustrate that the SSFD is a robust and fast algorithm.

Theory and experimental results on the self-starting passive mode-locked Yb fiber ring laser generating short pulse are reported. The relations between the laser cavity parameters and mode-locked pulse characters are discussed. 980 nm LD pumped laser is used as the pump source and high concentration Yb 3+ -doped fiber is adopted as gain medium. Using the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect of the fiber, self-starting stable mode-locked pulse is obtained, with center wavelength of 1046nm, 3 dB bandwidth of 6.01 nm and 20 dB bandwidth of 16 nm. The mode-locked threshold power is 150 mW and output power is 26 mW with 50 MHz repetition rate.

In this paper, a highly-doped Yb/sup 3+/ fiber ring laser with short cavity has been presented. Comparing with normal Yb/sup 3+/ doped fiber, the relationships between the important characteristics of the Yb/sup 3+/ doped fiber laser such as threshold power, output power and laser parameters such as pump power, fiber length, couple ratio are analyzed. Numerical results are coincident with the experiment phenomenon.
