This study evaluated kidney function of healthy Santa Ines ewes, bred in Sao Paulo State. The aim of this paper was to establish standard reference values and stipulate value variation caused by age group factor. We determined seric and urinary levels of urea, creatinine, sodium and potassium, and urinary GGT from 128 ewes, divided into 4 groups according to age. Also urinalysis was made in 128 urine samples. No significant statistical difference was found regarding density values between all groups, although there was an increase in urea values, creatinine and sodium, and an decrease in urinary proteins and GGT in group 2, 3 and 4 older than group1. In relation to the seric parameters, there was significative statistical difference in urea and creatinine values between the groups, as an increase in urea and creatinine. Potassium decreased in the older groups 2, 3 and 4. Evaluating the results obtained for renal function, we found that the mean values of density were 1.03±0.01, pH 7.1±1.35, urea (mg/dL) 1342±1085, creatinin 42.39±23,36, total protein (g/dL) 5.61±2.88, GGT (U/L) 1.44±1.31, sodium and potassium (mmol/L) were 15.93±20.13 and 240±117 respectively. In the serum medium values were: urea (mg/dL) 32.33±19.81, creatinine 1.22±0.20, sodium and potassium (mmol/L) 145.7±8.8 and 5.5±1.30 respectively.

The prevalence of lentivirus infection of small ruminants (LVPR) was determined in samples of serum from goats and sheep in slaughterhouses from ten districts of Pernambuco State. The serological test was used in agarose gel immunodiffusion (AGID) with antigen caprine arthritis and encephalitis virus (CAE)/Maedi Visna virus. Among the 369 blood serum samples of goats examined, seven (1.89%) (0.8–3.9%) were seropositive, and among the 383 sheep samples examined, just one (0.26%) (0.0–1.4%) was infected. The seven seropositive goats came from public slaughterhouses from Gravata (n=2), Sertânia (n=4) and Timbauba (n=1), and the soropositive sheep was from a public slaughterhouse of Serra Talhada. The soroprevalence of LVPR infection in small ruminants from Pernambuco’s slaughterhouses, of 1.06% (8/752), is considered low.

Based upon a history of reproductive disorders, a serological survey and attempts to isolate Brucella ovis were performed in 28 farms in the State of Sao Paulo, in a total of 294 sheep. The sera sampled on the occasion of the visit to the farms were subject to complement fixation. During clinical examination, samples of several suspicious biological materials were collected for further bacterial culture in Brucella agar medium, in a total of 16 aborted foetuses, one uterus, one placenta, 13 uterine discharge, six vaginal swabs, 17 semen samples and three preputial swabs. The proportion of sheep with a history of reproductive disorders and serum reactive for B. ovis was of 1.7% (5/294), including one ram and four ewes, with titres ranging from 800 IU to 1600 IU. Four of the 28 sheep herds surveyed had serum reactive animals (14,3%). All cultures of biological samples were negative, including semen and swabs from the reproductive organs of a Texel ram, positive in two complement fixation tests, six months apart. In the sheep herds surveyed in the State of Sao Paulo, it was not possible to relate the reproductive disorders to the positive serology for B. ovis, however, foci were detected, representing a risk factor for bacterial dissemination in the herds.
