El objetivo de este articulo fue proponer una coleccion no exhaustiva de 36 patrones para el diseno de interacciones en aplicaciones sociales para adultos mayores. La propuesta representa un punto de partida confiable para facilitar, a disenadores/desarrolladores, la integracion de usabilidad en las interfaces de estas tecnologias con el fin de fomentar su aceptacion, uso y adopcion entre los adultos mayores. Esta propuesta se basa en esfuerzos previos comunmente expresados como criterios y guias de diseno para definir los posibles problemas de usabilidad en este tipo de interfaces, y se concentra en reforzar estos enfoques mediante la integracion de una mayor descripcion de tales anomalias y alternativas de solucion bajo una estructura de patrones util para los disenadores/desarrolladores. Se realizo un estudio de usabilidad con la tecnica «evaluacion heuristica» (comunmente utilizada en interaccion hombre-maquina para obtener la percepcion de los usuarios sobre un diseno particular). El trabajo se llevo a cabo desde dos perspectivas: el punto de vista de expertos tecnicos y la percepcion de un grupo social de adultos mayores. Los resultados reflejaron que los patrones propuestos propician la creacion de interfaces bien disenadas capaces de ofrecer una mejor experiencia de uso y promueven un impacto positivo en la calidad de vida de los adultos mayores.The aim of this paper is to present a non-exhaustive set of 36 design patterns for interactive social applications used by older adults. This proposal represents a reliable starting point for designers/developers to easily incorporate usability in interfaces for said technology promoting technology acceptance, use and adoption among older adults. The proposed patterns were based on previous efforts commonly presented as a design criteria and guidelines to describe usability issues in this kind of interfaces, reinforcing those alternatives by specifying related usability issues and providing solutions in a pattern-fashion useful for designers/developers. Pertinence of the patterns was analyzed through a usability study implementing «heuristic evaluation» technique (frequently used in Human-Computer Interaction to obtain users’ perception on a particular design). The study was conducted from two perspectives: the vantage point from experts, and the perception of a social group of older adults. Among the current challenges of the Smart City, traffic management and maintenance are of utmost importance. Road surface monitoring is currently performed by humans, but the road surface condition is one of the main indicators of road quality, and it may drastically affect fuel consumption and the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. Abnormalities in the road, such as manholes and potholes, can cause accidents when not identified by the drivers. Furthermore, human-induced abnormalities, such as speed bumps, could also cause accidents. In addition, while said obstacles ought to be signalized according to specific road regulation, they are not always correctly labeled. Therefore, we developed a novel method for the detection of road abnormalities (i.e., speed bumps). This method makes use of a gyro, an accelerometer, and a GPS sensor mounted in a car. After having the vehicle cruise through several streets, data is retrieved from the sensors. Then, using a cross-validation strategy, a genetic algorithm is used to find a logistic model that accurately detects road abnormalities. The proposed model had an accuracy of 0.9714 in a blind evaluation, with a false positive rate smaller than 0.018, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.9784. This methodology has the potential to detect speed bumps in quasi real-time conditions, and can be used to construct a real-time surface monitoring system.

Mobile technology has provided many advantages for all members of the Information Society. Communication, Organization, Transportation, Health, and Entertainment are just a few areas of mobile technology application. Nevertheless, there are still some people who find difficulties using it. Although there are a lot of applications of mHealth available for almost any kind of mobile device, there is still a lack of understanding and attending users’ needs, especially those of users with disabilities. People with Down syndrome have the potential to function as active members of our society, taking care of themselves and their own, having jobs, voting, and so on, but their physical limitations prevent them from handling correctly technological tools that could enhance their performance, including mobile technology. In this paper, we had analyzed how suitable the mHealth applications are for users with Down syndrome. We tested 24 users and analyzed their physical performance in fine-motor movements while developing a set of tasks over a mHealth application. Results showed that the design of a mHealth application for users with Down syndrome must center its interaction with simple gestures as tap and swipe avoiding more complex ones as spread and rotate. This research is a starting point to understand the fundamentals of people with Down syndrome interacting with mobile technology.

In this paper, we have performed denoising when the pixel values of images are corrupted by Gaussian and Poisson noises. This paper introduces a new class exponential distribution which lies between Poisson and Gamma distributions. The proposed method combines the ion for denoising the pixels and later a minimization using log-likelihood estimation is performed. The characteristic equation is based on various image parameters like mean, variance, mean deviation, distortion index, shape and scale parameters for minimizing the noise and for maximizing image edge strength to enhance overall visual quality of the image. By utilizing the exponential distribution, we can adaptively control the distortion in the image by minimizing Gaussian and Poisson noises in accordance with the image feature. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is very efficient to strengthen edge information and remove noise. To provide a probabilistic model we have used statistical approximation of mean and variances. Later, we have evaluated sensitivity and variability effect as well on the image restoration. Experiments were conducted on different test images, which were corrupted by different noise levels in order to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison with standard and other related denoising methods.
