Cubic optical nonlinearity of free electrons in bulk gold

A fast (Tau(response) <90 fs) free-electron spin-f lipping frequency-degenerate nonlinearity with a signif icant value of|chi((3))(xxyy)(omega,omega,omega,-omega)chi((3))(xxyy)(omega,omega,omega,-omega)|~10(-)(8)esu has been observed in bulk gold at 1260 nm by use of a new pump-probe polarization-sensitive technique.

Femtosecond optical nonlinearity of metallic indium across the solid–liquid transition

A very strong (~10(-8) esu) femtosecond cubic nonlinearity in metallic indium that increased sharply in magnitude as the temperature approached the melting point was observed.

Direct measurement of carrier spin relaxation times in opaque solids using the specular inverse Faraday effect

Abstract Using a spectroscopic technique based on the transient specular inverse Faraday effect (SIFE) we found the electron spin relaxation time in bulk GaAs at room temperature to be 11 ± 1 ps. The hole spin dynamics gives a SIFE signal of the opposite sign and may be resolved in the time-domain.

Femtosecond pulse duration measurements utilizing an ultrafast nonlinearity of nickel

A new, broadband, background free autocorrelation technique for measuring pulse durations of visible and infrared femtosecond laser pulses is described. The technique is based on the use of a reflective polarization-sensitive interaction in metallic nickel.

A strong ultrafast cubic nonlinearity χ(3) of 10-7 ÷ 10-9 esu was observed on liquefaction of a metal for the first time.
