A fast (Tau(response) <90 fs) free-electron spin-f lipping frequency-degenerate nonlinearity with a signif icant value of|chi((3))(xxyy)(omega,omega,omega,-omega)chi((3))(xxyy)(omega,omega,omega,-omega)|~10(-)(8)esu has been observed in bulk gold at 1260 nm by use of a new pump-probe polarization-sensitive technique.

We report what is to our knowledge the first observation of coherent and incoherent terms of the specular inverse Faraday effect. The specular inverse Faraday effect is treated as a four-wave mixing phenomenon, and the role of the phase-conjugated wave in the polarization-altering interaction is disclosed. Several components of the nonresonant cubic susceptibility tensor in InSb and GaAs are measured and found to be in the 10(-7)-10(-6)-esu range.

A very strong (~10(-8) esu) femtosecond cubic nonlinearity in metallic indium that increased sharply in magnitude as the temperature approached the melting point was observed.

We report on the phenomenological theory of frequency degenerate pump–probe polarization-sensitive wave interactions at the boundary with a nonlinear medium. We consider media with local and nonlocal optical responses. The general analytical solutions for polarization-plane azimuth rotation and ellipticity of the transmitted and reflected probe waves are obtained. It is found that the pump-intensity-dependent change of the polarization state of transmitted and reflected probe waves has coherent and incoherent contributions. Nonlinear polarization phenomena of the specular inverse Faraday effect, the specular optical Kerr effect, the specular nonlinear anisotropic effect, specular nonlinear optical activity, and specular nonlinear nonlocal birefringence are discussed.

Evidence of time-nonreversible nonreciprocal linear birefringence and dichroism has been observed in a GaAs crystal in experiments in transmission and reflection. Time-nonreversibility is treated in terms of the quantum theory of nonlocal optical response, revealing the role of the spin-orbit interaction.

Abstract Using a spectroscopic technique based on the transient specular inverse Faraday effect (SIFE) we found the electron spin relaxation time in bulk GaAs at room temperature to be 11 ± 1 ps. The hole spin dynamics gives a SIFE signal of the opposite sign and may be resolved in the time-domain.

Abstract Observation of coherent and incoherent terms of the Specular Inverse Faraday Effect (SIFE) in YBa2Cu3O7−δ is reported. The spectroscopic potential of measurements of the coherent and incoherent terms of SIFE is revealed and two components of nonresonant cubic susceptibility tensor in this superconducting material are measured and found to be in 10-9-10-8 esu range.

We present what is to our knowledge the first experimental observation of the specular nonlinear anisotropic polarization effect of a pump-induced polarization-plane rotation for normal-incidence reflection from the (001) surface of a cubic crystal. In GaAs, azimuth rotation of the order of 9 × 10−6 rad is seen for a pump intensity of 75 MW/cm−2 at 750 nm, from which the anisotropic component of the cubic nonlinearity |Re(χxxxx − 2χxxyy − χxyyx )| = 5 × 10−9 esu is found.

Intense picosecond optical excitation of GaAs and InSb crystals induces specular polarization azimuth rotation for a probe beam normally reflected from the (001) surface. The effect may be interpreted as manifestation of a transient time-non-reversible state.
