Averaged Q-factor method using amplitude histogram evaluation for transparent monitoring of optical signal-to-noise ratio degradation in optical transmission system

I. Shake; Hidehiko Takara

Presents the averaged Q-factor method based on an amplitude histogram evaluation to monitor the optical signal quality of an optical transmission system. We examine several parameters of this method and provide direction to design a novel optical signal quality monitoring circuit.

Simple measurement of eye diagram and BER using high-speed asynchronous sampling

I. Shake; Hidehiko Takara; S. Kawanishi

This paper discusses eye diagram measurement using asynchronous sampling. Simple bit error rate (BER) estimation from eye diagrams is performed. The use of high-speed asynchronous optoelectrical (OE) sampling enables the monitoring of fixed timing Q-factors to be performed simply.

Simple Q factor monitoring for BER estimation using opened eye diagrams captured by high-speed asynchronous electrooptical sampling

I. Shake; Hidehiko Takara; S. Kawanishi

We propose a new signal-quality (Q factor) monitoring method that uses opened eye diagrams captured by asynchronous sampling. The use of high-speed asynchronous electrooptical sampling makes fixed timing Q factor monitoring simple to perform. The method is experimentally compared to the existing averaged Q factor method.

160-Gb/s (20 Gb/s /spl times/ 8) optical time-division-multiplexing is demonstrated using a multiplexer based on periodically poled lithium niobate hybrid integrated planar lightwave circuits. With this multiplexer, eight 20-Gb/s signals are independently modulated and time division multiplexed all-optically. To confirm the quality of the multiplexed signal, it was demultiplexed and bit error rates were measured. The measured power penalties are less than 2.2 dB.

This letter provides the first report of 160-Gb/s optical time-division-multiplexed transmission with all-channel independent modulation and all-channel simultaneous demultiplexing. By using a multiplexer and a demultiplexer based on periodically poled lithium niobate and semiconductor optical amplifier hybrid integrated planar lightwave circuits, 160-km transmission is successfully demonstrated.

Chromatic dispersion dependence of asynchronous amplitude histogram evaluation of NRZ signal

I. Shake; Hidehiko Takara

This paper presents the chromatic dispersion dependence of the averaged Q-factor method based on an evaluation of an asynchronous amplitude histogram. We analyze nonreturn-to-zero optical signals using a numerical simulation based on several parameters for signal quality monitoring. The results are compared with the optical signal-to-noise ratio dependence of the method and the possibility of distinguishing the origins of the bit-error-rate distortion is discussed.
