ATLAS is one of the two general purpose experiments being built for the LHC at CERN. Its muon spectrometer consists of high precision chambers made of drift tubes (MDTs = monitored drift tubes). The properties and the performance of the chambers is described. Highlights of the construction and the quality control of the first chamber of type BIS to be used in ATLAS are presented.

In metal machining processes, it is necessary to study the vibration phenomena which take place in cutting area between the cutting tool and the workpiece in order to ascertain the factors that affect them. Subject of this paper is the analysis of the influence of vibration phenomena during micro-milling on chip formation mechanisms and thereby on the workpiece topomorphy. In particular, the cutting parameters, such as the cutting speed, the feed rate and the axial cutting depth, which affect the workpiece topomorphy are experimentally studied. Based on cutting force measurements correlated with the workpiece topomorphy under various cutting process parameters useful results are extracted. In this way, the impact of vibration phenomena, taking place in micro-milling due to the cutting process, on the workpiece topomorphy can be evaluated.

This paper presents the initial phases of the design and development of a laboratory scale facility for the characterization of the intraocular pressure in the human eye. The development phase included the mechanical design of the various parts of the facility. Several manufacturing techniques have been employed including multi-axes computer aided manufacturing as well as three dimensional shaping of porous media. Furthermore, contact lens manufacturing technology has been employed in order to form the various parts of the eye model such as the cornea and the eyelid. Specialized contact lenses are envisaged that would be used to obtain fluid motion and mechanical stress data from the flow simulating the biological flow in the anterior chamber. Particular effort has been devoted in the characterization of the mechanical properties of the materials used to simulate the cornea in order to guarantee dynamic similarity between the model and the biological flow field.
