The Role of Liquid Fuels Channel Configuration on the Combustion inside Cylindrical Mesoscale Combustor

Achmad Fauzan Hery Soegiharto; Ing Wardana; Lilis Yuliati; Mega Nursasongko

This research intended to investigate combustion of liquid fuel in 3.5 mm inner diameter quartz glass tube mesocombustor, based on liquid film evaporation by using heat recirculation. The mesocombustor has a copper section for heating and evaporating the liquid fuel. In mesocombustor type A, the fuel was glided through the narrow canal in the copper wall while the air was glided through the axial of combustor. The flame could only be successfully stabilized in high-ratio equivalent ranging from to , due to the gap without combustion reaction caused by high air-fuel mixture over the limits of flame stability. Mesocombustor type B, which has annulus-shaped canal, could shift the flame stability from to ; however, it also narrowed the limits of flame stability due to the wall cooling. In mesocombustor type C, both liquid fuel and air were glided through the annulus-shaped canal in the copper wall to fix the fuel evaporation and air mixture. The flame of type C was successfully stabilized, from to wider than types A and B. The flame of type C mesocombustor is circle-shaped and fitted to cross section of mesocombustor, but it still has thin gap without any flames due to thermal quenching by the wall.

Study on Characteristics of Ricinoleic Acid as a Phase Change Material

Firman; Ing Wardana; Sudjito Soeparman; Nurkholis Hamidi

Today the use of fatty acids as heat storage substance is growing. The use of several types of fatty acids such as oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid as heat storage materials has been studied. But, ricinoleic acid from castor oil has not been studied yet. This study was conducted to ascertain the characteristics of ricinoleic acid as a heat storage material.Methyl ricinoleic was obtained through transesterification of castor oil by methanol with sodium methoxide catalyst. Methyl ricinoleic was then hydrolyzed using sodium hydroxide in ethanol to produce ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid was identified by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer) test standard ASTM E 1252-07 and its chemical composition was determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The identification of the type, amount, and environment of hydrogen in the compound was determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The analysis on characteristics, that is, transition and melting temperatures of material was performed by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) test standard ASTM D 3419-08.Based on the results of FTIR, GC-MS, 1H-NMR, dan 13C-NMR tests, the spectra that were obtained indicated that the test substances were methyl and ricinoleic acid 70.349%. And, the results of DSC tests indicated that the characteristics of ricinoleic acid absorbed and released latent heat at the temperature from 8.58°C and absorbed sensible heat at the temperature from-7.17°C to 8.58°C.

Flame Stability Measurement on Rectangular Slot Meso-Scale Combustor

Satworo Adiwidodo; Ing Wardana; Lilis Yuliati; Mega Nur Sasongko

The biggest problem of combustion in the micro-scale or meso-scale combustor is heat loss. Heat loss led to a difficult of stable flame. This research aims to elucidate the flame stabilization and flammability limit of LPG-oxygen premixed flame, temperature distribution and flame visualization. Flame stabilization and flammability limit map are shows in φ - U plane. The result shows that there are six regions in the map that is stable without noise, stable with noise, transition zone, dead zone, pseudo stable, and blow off. Measurement parameters are LPG-oxygen flow velocity at various equivalent ratio and temperature. The flame stabilization and flammability limit map within measurement parameters are discussed.
