The crystal structure of antimony trichloride

Ingvar Lindqvist; Alfred Niggli

Abstract The crystal structure of antimony trichloride, SbCl 3 , has been determined. The dimensions of the orthorhombic unit cell are a = 6·37 A , b = 8·12 A , and c = 9·47 A . The space group is P bnm . The following parameters have been obtained: 4Sb in 4( c ) with x = 0·025 and y = 0·992 4Cl I in 4( c ) with x = 0·667 and y = 0·075 8Cl II in 8( d ) with x = 0·133 and y = 0·183 and z = 0·067. In the antimony trichloride molecules, which form the crystal structure, the distance SbCl is 2·36 ± 0·03 A and the angle ClSbCl 95·2°.

Some esters and carboxylic acids as donor molecules

M. Zackrisson; Ingvar Lindqvist

Abstract Infra-red spectra of addition compounds of CH 3 COOC 2 H 5 with SbCl 5 , SnCl 4 and SbCl 3 and of addition compounds of HCOOC 2 H 5 with SnCl 4 and SbCl 3 have been obtained. The shifts in ν(CO) and ν(CO) have been studied and it is shown that the carbonyl oxygen atom functions as a donor atom. Infra-red spectra of the donor-acceptor systems CH 3 COOHSbCl 5 , CH 3 COOHSnCl 4 , CH 3 COOHSbCl 3 and HCOOHSbCl 5 as pure mixtures or as solutions in 1,2-dichlorethane have also been investigated. In those cases ν(CO) and ν(OH) have been studied. The spectra indicate that the carbonyl oxygen is the donor atom and that the strong acceptor SbCl 15 forms adducts with the monomeric acids, but that in interaction with the weaker acceptors SnCl 4 and SbCl 3 the hydrogen bonds are retained.
