International orientation and cross-functional integration in new product development

Drawing upon an organizational learning perspective, this study suggests that international orientation and functional integration are important determinants of new product success in the global market. Based on survey data of 188 Korean manufacturing firms, we examined the interplay between international orientation and cross-functional integration in new product development (NPD). The results reveal that internationally oriented firms can gain crucial market expertise for successful NPD, and cross-functional integration amplifies the benefits of international orientation. Consistent with the organizational learning perspective, this study highlights the importance of forming an organizational culture that actively pursues foreign market opportunities and promotes collaboration among functional areas.

A Study of Relationship between International Orientation and Performance in International Markets for SMEs

The trend of increasing internationalization of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is noteworthy. International business is often more challenging for SMEs because of their lack of financial and tangible resources compared with multinational enterprises (MNEs). In this study, we investigate the effect of international orientation of SMEs on performance in international markets, and explore a set of crucial internal and external factors that may potentially moderate this relationship. Using survey data from SMEs in Korea, we found the positive impact of international orientation on international performance. In addition, the findings indicate that the positive relationship between international orientation and performance might be stronger for larger firms and under conditions of high technology turbulence and market similarity in foreign markets. The results imply that international business managers should consider these internal and external factors in order to enhance their organizational performance in international markets.

The Interface between Standardization and Product Strategy in International Markets: An Empirical Study of Korean Exporters

마케팅 표준화 전략은 규모의 경제 및 복잡성의 감소 등을 통한 효율성 달성이라는 주요한 이점에도 불구하고 표준화 전략과 성과 간 관계에 대한 연구는 일관된 결과를 보이고 있지 않다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구는 표준화 전략이 모든 상황에서 동일한 형태로 기업 성과를 향상시키지는 않는다는 점에 주목하였으며, 특히 표준화의 긍정적 효과를 극대화할 수 있는 대안으로 제품 전략과의 전략적 적합성을 통한 상생작용을 알아보고자 하였다. 제품 전략은 고품질/고가격의 프리미엄 전략, 고품질/저가격의 가치 전략, 저품질/저가격의 경제적 전략으로 구분된다. 프리미엄 제품 전략의 경우, 표준화된 제품 전략보다는 고객별 맞춤화된 마케팅 프로그램의 접근을 통해 긍정적인 효과를 최대화 할 수 있다는 점에서, 프리미엄 제품 전략을 실행하는 기업의 경우 국제 마케팅 프로그램 표준화 전략의 긍정적인 효과를 상쇄할 수 있다. 반면, 경제적 제품 전략의 경우 낮은 수준의 생산 비용이나 유통 비용의 달성을 통해 경쟁기업에 비해 높은 수준의 이익을 창출하기 위해서는 표준화 전략을 통해 비용 절감의 효과를 누리는 것이 도움이 된다. 특히 제품의 포지셔닝에 있어 저가격 제품을 선택할 경우, 표준화된 마케팅 프로그램을 통해 경제적 효율성을 높이는 것이 기업 성과에 긍정적 영향을 미칠것으로 예상하였다. 한국 수출업체를 대상으로 한 실증 분석 결과, 마케팅 표준화 전략은 기업 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 끼치며, 경제적 제품 전략의 경우 마케팅 표준화의 긍정적인 효과가 더욱 커질 것이라는 가설이 지지되었음을 알 수 있었다.
