Nutritional ergogenic aids. | 2004
Ira Wolinsky; Judy A. Driskell
Nutritional Ergogenic Aids provides an up-to-date review of what is hypothetical and what is known about the most extensively used nutritional ergogenic aids dietary supplements to enhance physical and athletic performance. Among the 23 aids discussed are branched-chain amino acids, carnitine, creatine, glucosamine, chrondroitin sulfate, taurine, biocarbonates, and ginseng. Research conducted primarily with data available from human studies is analyzed and discussed. The book presents information and guidelines on safe use and provides a scientific basis regarding the benefits, shortcomings, and usefulness of nutritional ergogenic aids.

Twelve male high school basketball players on a varsity team were subjects (age: 16.4 ± 0.7 yr; weight: 77.0 ± 8.9 kg; height: 187 ± 7 cm). For three consecutive weekdays during their preseason stage of training, subjects weighed or measured the volume of all food consumed. Group mean energy and selected nutrient intakes exceeded the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) except for zinc (91 percent). However, there were instances among individual subjects of marginal intake (< 70 percent RDA). In addition, the subjects consumed more energy than same-age, typical American males, presumably due to their participation in sport. By contrast, subjects had the same nutritional intake as high school football athletes previously reported by our laboratory.
