Representações do trabalho: estudo sobre confinamento na indústria petrolífera

Denise Medeiros Ribeiro Salles; Isabel de Sá Affonso da Costa

This article explores the influence of the confined work system on the organizational environment representations and social behaviors, inside and outside the workplace. Confinement may be referred to as a total experience in the workplace, imposing special work and life regimes over workers. The study, based on Bourdieu´s and on Moscovici’s Social Representations Theory, explored how confined workers construct meanings and representations of their work through free evocation and discourse analysis. Forty interviews were conducted in two large companies in the oil industry, with head offices in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias (RJ). The results presented confirmed the influence of confined work environments in the formation of beliefs and the consolidation of specific behaviors, based on defense mechanisms designed to maintain psychological stability of workers, essential to survival in such environments.

Maria Célia Vieira Ladain; Isabel de Sá Affonso da Costa; Denise Medeiros Ribeiro Salles

To be regarded as a company of economy of communion (EEdC), a firm should follow specific principles, grounded on the values of the sharing culture, expressed in the Charter of Principles of the Company of Economy of Communion (EdC). This study aimed at verifying whether the companies of Polo Spartaco corroborate the principles expressed in this charter, in the daily practice of people management, through a descriptive case study, with a qualiquantitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with managers, application of a questionnaire to employees, direct observation, and documentary evidence. The results point out that the people management practices at the companies connected to Polo Spartaco, in fact, corroborate the discourse expressed in the Charter of Principles of EdC. It was observed that their people management practices, albeit poorly structured, are successful in generating productivity, commitment, participation, and consolidation of values.

Isabel de Sá Affonso da Costa

The new technologies of control in contemporary organizations rely on the constitution of the adequate subjects for performing organizational roles. Their objective is to control at a distance, instead of the direct supervising of individuals. It can be said that teleworking is the managerial initiative that has taken further the idea of distance between organizations and individuals. This paper aims at exploring how organizational control takes place in a situation in which physical distance between organization and individual is clearly established. Twenty-five teleworkers residing in Rio de Janeiro city were interviewed. All of the interviewees are teleworkers who hold stead job positions and perform knowledge-intensive tasks.

Knowledge Creation in Hybrid Organisations: A Case Study in a Quasi-Governmental Organisation

Isabel de Sá Affonso da Costa; Elaine Tavares; Arthur Marcelo Nicolau Peixoto

The organisational structure of hybrid organisations is affected by multiple institutional influences, considering power flows and organisational processes from the public and private sectors. Given this dynamic, the process of knowledge creation presents some particularities. This article aims to understand the specificities of knowledge creation in large hybrid organisations characterized as large structures with multiple institutional influences, based on a case study of a Brazilian organisation — SESC. Data collection was based on four sources: (i) documental research; (ii) questionnaire with evocative phrases; (iii) structured interviews; and (iv) direct observation. The content analysis technique was used to codify and interpret information. The results offer significant contributions for these hybrid organisations, indicating that they need to access how the bureaucratic model inhibits their knowledge creation, while restricting tacit knowledge sharing, causing the lack of sense of urgency and reducing autonomy and creativity.
