In this investigation the performance of three wetland systems, operated with UASB effluent was evaluated with respect to removal of nutrients, pathogens, as well as carbonaceous matter over a three years period. The efficiency of carbonaceous material removal varied from 70 to 86%; the produced effluent maintained an average value of 60mg.L-1. The removal of nitrogen and phosphorus during the first year of operation was considerable, 66 and 86% respectively. The wetland with vegetation produced effluent with a higher removal efficiency of thermo-tolerant Coliforms than units without vegetation, when both were operated with the same hydraulic load (23 mm d-1). However, variance analysis confirmed that there was no significant difference between the coliform removal efficiencies in the systems with and without vegetation.

In recent years, there has been an increasing need to design wastewater treatment systems that are capable of removing both organic material and nutrients, notably nitrogen and phosphorus. This study evaluated biological phosphorus removal by activated sludge systems fed with domestic sewage and operating as sequencing batch reactors (SBR) with different solids retention times (SRT) namely 20, 5 and 3 days. This was supported by respirometry experiments at bench scale using acetate as the source of organic carbon. The results showed satisfactory total phosphorus removal efficiencies mean values between 79-82% for the three regimes with the best removal efficiency occurring in the SBR operating with a five-day SRT.

The techniques of wastewater treatment are widely used consists in the use of anaerobic and aerobic systems operating individually, however, these technologies have disadvantages that need to be adjusted. Systems combined anaerobic aerobic appear as viable alternative, because, can gather the advantages of both technologies and promote significant removal of organic material and nutrients. Thus, this study aimed to treat wastewater in anaerobic aerobic combined system, seeking to produce effluent with low concentrations of organic matter and nutrients, as well as investigating the potential of biomass production in both systems, estimating the mass balance of the load organic and nitrogen applied. The experimental investigation consisted of a combined monitoring system: Anaerobic Anoxic Reactor followed by Aerated Reactor with immobilized submerged Support Means in the recirculation system. The combined system efficiently removed expressed in COD organic matter (92%), SST (93%), total nitrogen (92%) and final effluent produced with average concentrations of nitrite and nitrate below 1 mg L -1 . However, the removal of phosphorus was considered unsatisfactory, as there was in the sludge disposal system. The results of the mass balance demonstrated the possibility of determination of removed organic and nitrogen fractions.
