The software development industry is facing two important issues: enabling rapid service development and integration of existing applications. Current approaches result in custom solutions that are not generally applicable. Therefore, we propose a service development and application integration system acting as a mediator between developers, users, services, and applications. In this paper, we present the prototype of the public information system mediator MidArc. We describe the mediators system architecture, the technology it is built upon, and the process of integration of distributed applications. The mediator prototype was created and used to develop the formal automata simulator as a public service, to integrate the automata simulator service into the distance learning application, and to run the distance learning system.

In recent years, the ubiquitous demands for cross-protocol application access are driving the need for deeper integration between SIP and SOAP. In this article we present a novel methodology for integrating these two protocols. Through an analysis of properties of SIP and SOAP we show that integration between these protocols should be based on application-specific converters. We describe a generic SIP/SOAP gateway that implements message handling and network and storage management while relying on application-specific converters to define session management and message mapping for a specific set of SIP and SOAP communication nodes. In order to ease development of these converters, we introduce an XML-based domain-specific language for describing application-specific conversion processes. We show how conversion processes can be easily specified in the language using message sequence diagrams of the desired interaction. We evaluate the presented methodology through performance analysis of the developed prototype gateway and high-level comparison with other solutions.

We introduce analytical models for predicting the performance of World Wide Web (WWW) proxy caches that are distributed over multiple proxy machines under various management protocol assumptions. The purpose of these models is to determine which distributed cache management (DCM) protocols are to be used for large-scale distributed caches. The accuracy and usefulness of our models is assessed by comparing the performance predicted by the models with measurements from real system in operation. We run tests with different values of various parameters that define behavior of distributed cache, communication protocol, DCM protocol, and application.
