For the first time, in-gas-cell laser spectroscopy study of the (57,59,63,65)Cu isotopes has been performed using the 244.164 nm optical transition from the atomic ground state of copper. The nuclear magnetic dipole moments for (57,59,65)Cu relative to that of (63)Cu have been extracted. The new value for (57)Cu of mu((57)Cu) = +2.582(7)mu(N) is in strong disagreement with the previous literature value but in good agreement with recent theoretical and systematic predictions.

Abstract In-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy studies on the neutron deficient 97–101Ag isotopes have been performed with the LISOL setup. Magnetic dipole moments and mean-square charge radii have been determined for the first time with the exception of 101Ag, which was found in good agreement with previous experimental values. The reported results allow tentatively assigning the spin of 97,99Ag to 9 2 and confirming the presence of an isomeric state in these two isotopes, whose collapsed hyperfine structure suggests a spin of 1 2 . The effect of the N = 50 shell closure is not only manifested in the magnetic moments but also in the evolution of the mean-square charge radii of the isotopes investigated, in accordance with the spherical droplet model predictions.

The new isotope 179Pb has been produced in the complete fusion reaction 40Ca + 144Sm ? 179Pb+5n at the velocity filter SHIP (GSI). Its ?-decay energy of 7350(20) keV and half-life value of 3.5+1.4? 0.8 ms were deduced based on the recoil???? correlation technique. A spin parity of I? = (9/2?) was tentatively assigned to the ground state of 179Pb; thus, it is based on the 1h9/2 orbital. Improved measurements of the ?-decay properties of 179Tlm and 175Aum are also presented.

States in the N = 28 nucleus Ar-46 have been studied by a two-neutron transfer reaction at REX-ISOLDE (CERN). A beam of radioactive Ar-44 at an energy of 2.16 AMeV and a tritium-loaded titanium target were used to populate Ar-46 by the H-3(Ar-44, p) two-neutron transfer reaction. Protons emitted from the target were identified in the T-REX silicon detector array. The excitation energies of states in Ar-46 have been reconstructed from the measured angles and energies of recoil protons. Angular distributions for three final states were measured and based on the shape of the differential cross section an excited state at 3695 keV was identified as J(pi) = 0(+). The angular differential cross section for the population of different states are compared to calculations using a reaction model employing both sequential and direct transfer of two neutrons. Results are compared to shell-model calculations using state-of-the-art effective interactions.
