Male and female sex determination in hair roots

J. François; M. Th. Matton-Van Leuven; J. Acosta

The authors report that observation of atebrin‐stained human hair roots under the fluorescent microscope is an easy, quick, and efficient method for accurate counting of Barr bodies in females, Y bodies in males, and, simultaneously, both types of bodies in Klinefelter patients.

Transplantation of Vitreous Cell Culture (With Colour Plate III and IV)

J. François; V. Victoria-Troncoso

Hyalocytes can be cultured and the culture can be perfectly used as a material for replacement of the vitreous. The newly formed vitreous appears to be normal both from a histological as well as from a physical point of view.

Ocular Infections Due to Gram-Negative and Non-Fermentative Microorganisms

J. François; M. Elewaut-Rysselaere

From ocular exudates we have isolated 70 strains of gram-negative bacilli not belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae. Besides Moraxella and Pseudomonasaeruginosa, we have isolated Mima -polymorpha, Herelleavaginicola, Pseudomonasfluorescens, Pseudomonasalcaligenes, Pseudomonasstutzeri or Pseudomonas species in 30 cases including keratitis, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer, infection of the orbital cavity or dacryocystitis. We have also isolated Flavobacterium, Empedobaeter and non-identified strains from 21 cases of various ocular infections.

Tissue Culture Study of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium ofthe Adult Pig

J. François; M.T. Matton-van Leuven; M.R. Verschraegen-Spae; J. Agostini Netto

A description is given of a technique for tissue culturing of the pigment epithelium of the adult pig and the preliminary results of the investigation are reported.

Ophthalmic Research | 1972

Collagenase and the Collagenase Inhibitors in Torpid Ulcers of the Cornea

J. François; E. Cambie

Rabbit corneas were burned with 0.5% caustic soda. Subsequently, they were treated with a solution of cysteine 0.15m or a suspension of cystine 0.15 m, with excellent results. Clinically, we obtained

Ophthalmic Research | 1972

Polarization Optical Investigations on the Submicroscopic Structure of the Corneal and Scleral Fibrocyte Cell Membrane

J. François; J. Feher

Polarization optical methods were used for the study of the submicroscopical structure of the cell membrane of the corneal and scleral fibrocytes and of the corneal endothelial cells. The bimolecular

Ophthalmic Research | 1970

Experimental Study of the Intraocular Inoculation of Histoplasma Duboisii

J. François; M. Elewaut-Rysselaere

The results of experimental inoculation of H. duboisii into the anterior chamber and the vitreous are described. The lesions are studied clinically, mycologically and histo-pathologically.

Genetic study of hyperlipoproteinaemia types IV and V.

J. François; F. Lentini; P. Hose; R. Rottiers

In a family, of which 32 members belonging to three generations could be examined, 21 subjects were normal, while 11 were affected by hyperlipoproteinaemia types IV and V or related biological disorders. Neither an autosomal dominant inheritance nor an autosomal recessive inheritance nor a multiple‐type hyperlipoproteinaemia can unreservedly be accepted.

Penicillamine in the Treatment of Alkali-Burned Corneas

J. François; E. Cambie; J. Feher; E. Van den Eeckhout

A clinical, histopathologic and ionic trace study was made of the effect of steroids, penicillamine and combined treatment on rabbit corneal burns by sodium hydroxide. Steroids are collagenase stimulators. Penicillamine is not only a collagenase inhibitor, but also a potent anti-inflammatory agent, which nevertheless can only counteract partially the steroid effect in corneal burns.

Tissue Culture Studies of the Adult Pig Retina

J. François; M.T. Matton-van Leuven; Agostini Netto; M.R. Verschraegen-Spae

The authors describe a technique for sterile dissection of the retina and the methods used for explanting it in tissue culture. They report the characteristics of the cellular outgrowth and the morphology of the newly formed cells in the primocultures and the subcultures. The main observation was the great variety of cell types obtained and the fact that at least three of them showed nervous characteristics.
