Effects of chitooligosaccharide supplementation on performance, blood characteristics, relative organ weight, and meat quality in broiler chickens

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with chitooligosaccharide (COS) on growth performance, blood characteristics, relative organ weight, and meat quality in broilers. A total of 480 broilers with an average initial BW of 45.04 g per chick were randomly allocated into 1 of the following 4 dietary treatments (20 broilers per pen with 6 pens per treatment): 1) CON (basal diet), 2) ANT (basal diet + 44 mg/kg of avilamycin), 3) COS0.2 (basal diet + 14 g/kg of COS), 4) COS0.4 (basal diet + 28 g/kg of COS). The experiment lasted for 5 wk and avilamycin was administered from d 0 to 21. Growth performance was measured on d 0, 21, and 35, and all other response criteria were measured on d 35. No change in feed conversion (G:F) was observed in response to any of the treatments throughout the experimental period (P > 0.05). However, BW gain and feed intake were greater (P < 0.05) in broilers provided with feed supplemented with COS than in those in the control group. In addition, broilers had significantly greater (P < 0.05) red blood cell and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations when they were provided with the COS0.4 diet, whereas the triglyceride concentration was lower (P < 0.05) in broilers in the COS0.2 treatment group. No other blood characteristics were affected by the treatments. Additionally, as the dietary COS concentration increased, the liver weight increased (P < 0.05). Conversely, as the concentrations of dietary COS increased, abdominal fat decreased (P < 0.05). Furthermore, meat yellowness decreased (P < 0.05) as the concentration of COS increased. Finally, the breast meat and abdominal fat of birds provided with feed supplemented with COS had a lower (P < 0.05) saturated fatty acid concentration but a greater concentration of total monounsaturated fatty acids (P < 0.05) than that of birds in the control. In conclusion, COS can improve the performance and breast meat quality of broilers while increasing the red blood cell and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in blood. In addition, COS can induce a decrease in abdominal fat and improve meat quality.

Effects of phenyllactic acid on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, microbial shedding, and blood profile in pigs

Ninety weanling pigs in Exp. 1 (6.27 +/- 0.73 kg; 21 d of age) and 96 growing pigs in Exp. 2 (21.73 kg +/- 1.29 kg; 56 d of age) were used in two 42-d experiments to evaluate the effect of phenyllactic acid (PLA) on growth performance, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM and N, fecal pH value, microbial shedding, and blood profiles. In Exp. 1, the 3 dietary treatments were 1) negative control (NC), 2) positive control (PC), NC + antibiotics, and 3) PLA, NC + 0.5% PLA. In Exp. 2, dietary treatments were 1) control diet (CON), 2) PLA-0.1, CON + 0.1% PLA, 3) PLA-0.2, CON + 0.2% PLA, and 4) PLA-0.3, CON + 0.3% PLA. In Exp. 1, pigs fed the PC and PLA diets had greater ADFI during the overall period (P < 0.05) and tended to have greater ADG and G:F from d 7 to 21 (P < 0.10) than those fed the NC diet. The ATTD of DM was greatest in pigs fed the PLA diet on d 20 and 41, and N digestibility on d 20 was greater in pigs fed the PLA diet (P < 0.05) than those fed the NC diet. The numbers of white blood cell and lymphocyte concentrations on d 42 were increased (P < 0.05) by the inclusion of antibiotics and PLA in the diet. In Exp. 2, G:F tended to increase when PLA was added (quadratic, P < 0.10). The ATTD of DM did not differ among treatments, but there was a tendency (quadratic, P < 0.10) for N digestibility to increase as PLA levels increased. The lymphocyte percentage on d 42 increased linearly as dietary PLA increased (P < 0.05). Additionally, the white blood cell counts on d 42 tended to increase as PLA levels increased (P < 0.10). In both experiments, there was no effect of treatment on the fecal pH or presence of Lactobacillus, but the number of Escherichia coli in feces on d 41 decreased in response to the addition of PLA [P < 0.05 and 0.001 (linear) in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively]. In conclusion, PLA can decrease the number of E. coli, and this novel dietary acid may have potential to stimulate the immune system for both weanling and growing pigs. Thus, it could be a good candidate as an alternative to antibiotics in pig diets.

Effect of dietary fermented garlic by Weissella koreensis powder on growth performance, blood characteristics, and immune response of growing pigs challenged with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of fermented garlic by Weissella koreensis powder (WKG) on pig growth performance and immune responses after an Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. In Exp. 1, 120 growing barrows (23.5 ± 0.5 kg of BW and 56 d of age) were used in a 35-d experiment to determine the optimal amounts of WKG. Pigs were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 treatments with 6 replicate pens and 4 pigs per pen. Dietary treatments included 1) NC (negative control; basal diet without antibiotics), 2) PC (positive control; basal diet + 1 g of tylosin/kg), 3) WKG1 (basal diet + 1 g of WKG/kg), 4) WKG2 (basal diet + 2 g of WKG/kg), and 5) basal diet + 4 g of WKG/kg. At the end of the feeding period, 12 pigs each were selected from the NC and WKG2 treatment groups, and 6 pigs were injected with LPS (50 μg/kg of BW) and the other 6 pigs with an equivalent amount of sterile saline, resulting in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Blood samples and rectal temperature data were collected at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 h after challenge. The ADG of pigs fed WKG- and antibiotic-supplemented diets was greater (P<0.05) than NC from d 14 to 35 and the overall phase, but no dosage-dependent effects were observed. At the end of the experiment, the fecal E. coli count was linearly reduced by the increasing amounts of WKG at d 35 (P=0.01). Challenge with LPS increased white blood cell counts at 6 and 8 h (P<0.01) and depressed lymphocyte concentration at 4, 8, and 12 h (P<0.01). During challenge, LPS injection increased rectal temperature at 2, 4, 6, and 8 h postchallenge (P<0.05), and WKG2 alleviated (P<0.05) the increase in the temperature at 2 h postchallenge. The LPS injection increased plasma tumor necrosis factor-α and IGF-1 concentrations at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 h (P<0.01), whereas an alleviating effect of WKG was observed at 4, 6, and 8 h after LPS challenge (P<0.05). At 2, 4, and 6 h postchallenge, concentration of cluster of differentiation-antigen-4-positive cells and cluster of differentiation-antigen-8-positive cells (CD4(+) and CD8(+), respectively) increased in the LPS treatments (P<0.05), and the WKG2 boosted this effect (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of WKG2 in growing pigs can improve ADG and have a beneficial effect on the immune response during an inflammatory challenge.

Effects of phenyllactic acid on growth performance, intestinal microbiota, relative organ weight, blood characteristics, and meat quality of broiler chicks

This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with phenyllactic acid (PLA) on growth performance, intestinal microbiota, relative organ weight, blood characteristics, and meat quality in broilers. A total of 500 male broilers (BW = 46.3 g) were randomly allotted into 1 of the following 5 dietary treatments: 1) basal diet (CON), 2) basal diet + 44 mg/kg of avilamycin (ANT), 3) basal diet + 0.2% PLA (PLA0.2), 4) basal diet + 0.4% PLA (PLA0.4), 5) basal diet + 0.2% PLA + 44 mg/kg of avilamycin (PA). Chicks fed PLA had lower feed intake (FI) from d 0 to 7 (P < 0.05) than those fed CON and ANT. From d 21 to 35, BW gain was greater in ANT, PLA0.4, and PA diets than CON and PLA0.2 diets (P < 0.05), whereas the FI was lowest in the PLA0.4 diet. Feed efficiency was depressed (P < 0.05) by the antibiotics and PLA supplementation during d 0 to 7, whereas it was improved (P < 0.05) in the PLA and ANT diets during d 21 to 35, with the best value in PLA0.4.The population of Escherichia coli in the large intestine was lower in the ANT, PLA0.4, and PA groups than the CON and PLA0.2 groups (P < 0.05). The relative weights of gizzard, liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius, breast, and abdominal fat were unaffected by any of the dietary supplementations. Treatment of PLA led to an increase (P < 0.05) in the concentrations of white blood cells and lymphocyte percentage. The yellowness of breast muscle decreased by ANT, PLA0.4, and PA treatment. In conclusion, PLA can improve growth performance when it is supplemented in finisher diet (d 21 to 35), whereas it can depress BW gain and FI in earlier days (d 0 to 7). In addition, PLA can also decrease the number of E. coli in the large intestine and improve the number of immune-related blood cells.

Effects of delta-aminolevulinic acid and vitamin C supplementation on feed intake, backfat, and iron status in sows.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary administered delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and vitamin C on the hematological profiles and performance of sows and sucking pigs and to determine if iron status could be improved by dietary administration of ALA. Seven days before parturition, 120 sows (Landrace x Yorkshire) were randomly assigned within parities to 1 of 4 dietary treatments. The lactation treatments were arranged as a 2 x 2 factorial with 2 ALA concentrations (0 or 10 mg/kg of feed, as fed) and 2 vitamin C concentrations (0 or 500 mg/kg of feed, as fed). After farrowing, daily feed allowance increased gradually, and sows had ad libitum access to feed by wk 2. Sows provided diets with ALA tended to consume more feed (P < 0.10) than sows fed diets that did not contain ALA. Conversely, backfat losses were less in sows that received the diets with ALA compared with those received the nonsupplemented diets (P < 0.05). Supplementation with ALA and vitamin C resulted in improved hematological profiles (total protein, albumin, and IgG) in sows (P < 0.05). The iron status in the blood and milk were also improved by ALA supplementation (P < 0.05). Moreover, the BW at weaning and the ADG during the sucking period increased in response to supplementation of ALA and vitamin C (P < 0.05). The blood iron status of piglets was also improved by ALA supplementation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of ALA can increase the blood iron status of sows and sucking pigs, as well as the iron transfer efficiency from sows to piglets through elevated milk iron concentrations.

Effect of Supplemental Medicinal Plants( Artemisia, Acanthopanax and Garlic ) on Growth Performance and Serum Characteristics in Lactating Sows, Suckling and Weanling Pigs

In Exp. 1, a total of forty eight multiparous sows were used in a 21-d performance assay. All litters were standardized at eleven piglets within 24h of parturition. Sows were fed one of the four experimental diets 1) CON(basal diet; Control), 2) MP1(basal diet added 0.05% of medicinal plant mixtures), 3) MP2 (basal diet added 0.1% of medicinal plant mixtures) and 4) MP3(basal diet added 0.2% of medicinal plant mixtures). Backfat thickness difference from farrowing to weaning was tended to increase in CON treatment compared to those of medicinal plants mixture(MP) treatments. However, there were not significant differences among the treatments(P>0.05). Sows ADFI was increased in sows fed MP2 treatment compared to MP3 treatment(P<0.05). Piglet weight gain was tended to increase in MP1 treatment compared to CON treatment(P<0.05). The glucose concentration of MP3 treatment was higher that of CON treatment(P<0.05). Exp. 2, a total of one hundred twenty weaning pigs (L×Y×D, 4.70±0.63kg average initial body weight) were used in a 20-d performance assay. Weanling pigs were fed treatments diets included 1) CON(basal diet; Control), 2) MP0.05(basal diet added 0.05% of medicinal plant mixtures), 3) MP0.1(basal diet added 0.1% of medicinal plant mixtures) and 4) MP0.15(basal diet added 0.15% of medicinal plant mixtures). Through entire experimental period, as MP increased in the diets, there was an increase in ADG(linear, P<0.067), improvement gain/feed(linear, P<0.018) and a decrease in ADFI (linear, P<0.008). DM digestibility was significantly increased with addition of MP(linear, P<0.004; quadratic, P<0.030). In conclusion, sows fed MP2 had showed less body weight loss and increased weight gain for suckling piglet. In weaning pigs, as supplementation MP from 0.05 to 0.1% in diet had improved growth performance and DM digestibility. Effect of soybean hull supplementation to finishing pigs on the emission of noxious gases from slurry

Ninety six pigs were assigned on the basis of body weight (BW) to one of four dietary treatments (4 pigs per pen and 6 pens per treatment) and fed for 4 weeks. Four 14.85% CP diets were formulated to contain graded levels of soybean hulls at 0, 5, 10, or 15%, respectively. The results showed that treatments did not affect growth performance. Coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) for dry matter (DM) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations were decreased linearly (P < 0.05) with the addition level of soybean hulls. Slurry ammonia nitrogen (NH(3)-N) was not affected with the increased soybean hulls levels, but volatile fatty acids (VFA) were linearly (P < 0.05) increased. Slurry pH and ammonia (NH(3)) emissions were significantly decreased by the addition of soybean hulls (Linear, P < 0.05). Conversely, slurry hydrogen sulphide (H(2)S) emissions exhibited an increase with the addition of soybean hulls (Linear, P < 0.10). Our data indicate that soybean hulls inclusion can decrease slurry pH value and NH(3) emission without any negative influence on growth performance.

세계적으로 축산 폐수로 인한 환경오염 문제는 매우 심각하게 거론되어져 왔으며 특히 네덜란드, 덴마크, 영국 등과 같은 축산 선진 국가에서의 연구는 매우 심도 있게 이루어져 왔다. 우리 나라의 경우도 최근 들어 축산업이 대규모 전업화 혹은 기업화 되면서 가축이 배설하는 분뇨가 심각한 수질 및 토양 오염원이 됨에 따라, 정부는 이들 축산 폐수를 억제하기 위한 일환으로 환경 시행법을 법률화하고 있다. 또한 농림수산부는 시설 개선과 축산 폐수의 처리를 위한 시설 지원에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 특히 환경청이나 환경 관련 단체의 활동이 강화되면서 일반 국민의 수질오염에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있는 가운데 이에 부응하는 축산인들의 자체 노력이 가세하여 축산 폐기물로부터 발생하는 수질오염에 대한 경각심은 초미의 관심사로 대두되고 있다. 동물의 품종의 개량과 함께 생산성을 저해하는 각종 질병의 예방, 치료 약제, 성장 촉진 및 사료 효율을 개선할 수 있는 물질이 사료첨가제로 개발되어 사용되었다. 동물의 성장 능력을 향상시키고 사료 효율을 개선하기 위하여 사용되는 물질로서는 항생제(Thrasher, 1968), 효소제(권 등, 2003), 호르몬제(Chung, 1990) 등이 있으며, 최근에는 축산악취저감 및 사료 효율개선 등을 위한 생균제에 관한 연구(박 등, 2001; 길 등, 2004)가 진행되고 있다. 하지만, 양돈 산업에 있어 생산성 향상뿐만 아니라 환경 친화적인 축산을 위하여 양돈을 하면서 발생하는 오염 물질을 감소시키는 것이 가장 시급한 문제로 대두됨에 따라 질소의 배설량을 줄이기 위해서는 저단백질 사료를 급여하거나 단백질 소화율을 개선시킬 수 있는 소화효소제나 미생물제제, 효모제, 생균제 등을 이용하여 배설량 및 질소의 배출량을 감소시킨다는 연구들이 있었으며(민 등, 1992; Park 등, 1994), Sutton 등(1999)과 Shriver 등(2003)은 사료내 단백질 수준을 낮추고, 합성아미노산을 급여함으로써 질소 배설량을 감소시켰다고 보고하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서 친환경적인 사료 개발은 사료 효율 및 영양소 소화율의 개선, 분뇨내 질소 배출량 및 악취 발생량을 감소시킬 수 있는 저공해 사료 개발에 대하여 연구하고자 하였다. 저공해 사료 개발에 대한 시험에서는 육성돈의 사료에서 대사에너지 함량을 낮추고, α-1, 6-galactosidase와 β-1,4-mannanase를 포함한 복합 효소제를 첨가하여 성장 능력 및 소화율에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 시험을 실시하였다. 사료내 낮은 CP의 함량과 복합 생균제를 첨가 급여 성장능력, 질소배설량 및 악취발생량에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 실시하였다. 【Two experiments were used to determine the effects of environment-friendly diets on growth performance, fecal excretion, nitrogen excretion and emission gases in manure for growing pigs. Effects of Dietary Probiotic Complex on Growth Performance, Blood Immunological Parameters and Fecal Malodor Gas Emission in Growing Pigs

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate effect of probiotic complex( Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus oryzae ) on growth performance, blood immunological parameters and fecal malodor gas emissions in growing pigs. Forty-eight pigs[(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc, 25.31±1.29kg average initial body weight] were used in 35d growth trial. Dietary treatments included CON(basal diet), PC1(basal diet + 0.1% probiotic complex) and PC2(basal diet + 0.2% probiotic complex). From d 0 to 20, ADFI was significantly increased in PC1 and PC2 compared to CON(Linear effect, P=0.013). From d 21 to 35, ADFI was increased in PC1 compared to CON(Quadratic effect, P=0.024). For the whole period, ADFI was increased PC2 and PC1 compared to CON(Linear effect, P=0.009, Quadratic effect, P=0.004). For the whole period, ADG was increased in PC1 compared to CON(Quadratic effect, P=0.017). G/F was not affected by treatments. Dry matter digestibility in PC2 was higher than PC1 and CON(Linear effect, P=0.001). Nitrogen digestibility was significantly higher in PC2 and PC1 than CON(Linear effect, P=0.005). In blood immunological parameters, Total protein, IgG, red blood cell(RBC) and white blood cell(WBC) were increased in PC2 compared to PC1 and CON(Linear effect, P<0.001, Quadratic effect, P<0.001). In fecal malodor gas emission, ammonia and acetic acid were significantly reduced in PC2 compared to CON(Linear effect, P<0.02). Hydrogen sulfide was significantly reduced in PC2 compared to CON(Linear effect, P=0.0002, Quadratic effect, P=0.018). However, total mercaptans was not affected by treatments. Water content of feces was not significantly different among the treatments. In conclusion, 0.2 % probiotic complex improved ADFI, apparent dry matter and nitrogen digestibility, Total protein, IgG, RBC and WBC. Also, it decreased ammonia, acetic acid and hydrogen sulfide emissions in growing pigs.(

Effects of Dietary Biotite Powder on Growth Performance, Changes in Blood Immune and Stress Related Parameters, and Fecal Malodor Gas Emission in Growing Pigs

본 연구는 흑운모 분말 급여시 육성돈에 생산성, 면역관련 혈액학적 지표, 혈청 내 스트레스 농도 및 분내 유해가스 발생에 미치는 영향을 구명하고자 실시하였다. 시험 동물은 [(Landrace ×Yorkshire)×Duroc] 3원 교잡종 육성돈 96두를 공시하였으며, 시험 개시시의 체중은 29.45±1.35kg으로 사양시험을 42일간 실시하였다. 시험설계에서 공시돈은 돈방당 4두씩 1) CON(Basal diet), 2) Solt2(Basal diet+Solto-B 0.2%), 3) Solt4(Basal diet+Solto-B 0.4%) 및 4) Solt6 (Basal diet+Solto-B 0.6%)로 4처리구에 각각 6돈방씩 완전 임의배치 하였다. 질소 소화율에서는 solt4 처리구가 CON과 solt2 처리구에 비해 유의적으로 높게 나타내었다(Linear effect = 0.016). 총 에너지에서는 Solt4와 Solt6 처리구가 CON 처리구에 비해 유의적으로 높게 나타내었다(Linear effect=0.008, Quadratic effect=0.019). 면역 및 스트레스 관련 혈액성상에서는 처리간의 차이가 없었다. 황화수소는 5 day와 10 day에서 대조구에 비해 Solt 처리구가 유의적으로 감소를 하였다(5 day, Linear effect=0.009, Quadractic effect=0.037; 10 day, Linear effect = 0.009). 아세트산는 5 day에서 대조구에 비해 Solt 처리구가 유의적으로 감소를 하였다(Linear effect
