0.8 /spl mu/m CMOS implementation of weighted-order statistic image filter based on cellular neural network architecture

Jacek Kowalski

In this paper, a very large scale integration chip of an analog image weighted-order statistic (WOS) filter based on cellular neural network (CNN) architecture for real-time applications is described. The chip has been implemented in CMOS AMS 0.8 /spl mu/m technology. CNN-based filter consists of feedforward nonlinear template B operating within the window of 3 /spl times/ 3 pixels around the central pixel being filtered. The feedforward nonlinear CNN coefficients have been realized using programmable nonlinear coupler circuits. The WOS filter chip allows for processing of images with 300 pixels horizontal resolution. The resolution can be increased by cascading of the chips. Experimental results of basic circuit building blocks measurements are presented. Functional tests of the chip have been performed using a special test setup for PAL composite video signal processing. Using the setup real images have been filtered by WOS filter chip under test.

Implementation of a Synchronized Oscillator Circuit for Fast Sensing and Labeling of Image Objects

Jacek Kowalski; Michal Strzelecki; Hyongsuk Kim

We present an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) CMOS chip that implements a synchronized oscillator cellular neural network with a matrix size of 32 × 32 for object sensing and labeling in binary images. Networks of synchronized oscillators are a recently developed tool for image segmentation and analysis. Its parallel network operation is based on a “temporary correlation” theory that attempts to describe scene recognition as if performed by the human brain. The synchronized oscillations of neuron groups attract a person’s attention if he or she is focused on a coherent stimulus (image object). For more than one perceived stimulus, these synchronized patterns switch in time between different neuron groups, thus forming temporal maps that code several features of the analyzed scene. In this paper, a new oscillator circuit based on a mathematical model is proposed, and the network architecture and chip functional blocks are presented and discussed. The proposed chip is implemented in AMIS 0.35 μm C035M-D 5M/1P technology. An application of the proposed network chip for the segmentation of insulin-producing pancreatic islets in magnetic resonance liver images is presented.

32x32 oscillator network chip for binary image segmentation

Jacek Kowalski; Michal Strzelecki

This paper presents the 32times32 CMOS VLSI chip of synchronised oscillators network designed for fast segmentation and labeling of binary images. The network chip architecture and its functional blocs were briefly described. The hardware realisation of oscillator network provides much faster image segmentation when compared to computer simulation techniques. Segmentation results of sample biomedical image obtained using the oscillator network chip are also presented and discussed.
