A fuzzy neural network for assessing the risk of fraudulent financial reporting

Jerry W. Lin; Mark I. Hwang; Jack D. Becker

While financial reporting fraud has become more prevalent and costly in recent years, fraud detection has been badly lagging. Several recent studies have examined the feasibility of various computer techniques in business and industrial applications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utility of an integrated fuzzy neural network (FNN) for fraud detection. The FNN developed in this research outperformed most statistical models and artificial neural networks (ANN) reported in prior studies. Its performance also compared favorably with a baseline Logit model, especially in the prediction of fraud cases.

The effects of customized communication skills training on undergraduate information systems majors

Jack D. Becker; Robert G. Insley; Megan L. Endres

This study evaluates the results of a two-year study in which specially-tailored communication skills training materials were integrated into an existing, seniorlevel capstone information systems (IS) course. The training materials were designed to better align the communications skills of IS graduates with actual IS managers’ requirements. To accomplish these goals, a tenstep, multi-disciplinary, communication skills instructional approach was developed. This approach was referred to as the CSA (Communication Skills Assistant) program. This study sought to: (1) assess the students’ perceotions toward the CSA program, and (2) determine the students’ perceived imnrovement

in skill levels in six core communication areas--writing, reading, speaking, listening, presenting, and nonverbalizing skills. The data in this study suggested that communication skills training integrated into the IS curriculum was positively accepted by students in the senior-level capstone IS course, but must still be strengthened in affecting students’ perceived communication skills improvement.

The Expert Opinion

Jack D. Becker; Daniel A. Peak

After more than a decade of research in information technology-enabled business process reengineering (BPR), no clear theory explains the link between information technology (IT) and organizational transformation. This paper introduces the use of social network analysis (SNA) methods to analyze this link. SNA is a social structural approach that focuses on dynamic relationships among the technology, its adopters, and the social context they are in. It is used in this study to test Galbraith’s Organizational Information Processing Theory (OIPT) in describing three IT-enabled BPR efforts. The results of the research show that SNA coupled with the OIPT is capable of explaining how technological innovation and process innovation interact within the context of BPR. The results of the research also provide measures that can be used by practitioners and researchers as leading indicators of BPR success.

A Comparison of IT Governance & Control Frameworks in Cloud Computing

Jack D. Becker; Elana Bailey

Andrew Jackson is co-founder and president of BravoTECH since 1996. He started his career in 1980 as a technical recruiter in the engineering field. He soon transitioned into sales, then into management. In the late 1990s, realizing that the burgeoning demand for information technology (IT) professionals would become the fastest growing sector within the staffing industry, he decided to start his own staffing business with a focus on recruiting and deploying IT personnel. After discussing options with several investors, he found clerical staffing company Imprimis that was interested in the growing IT sector. Imprimis worked with Jackson to form a separate corporation with agreements for shared resources for accounting, human resources (HR), marketing and internal IT. This corporation was the genesis of BravoTECH. Today BravoTECH has clients throughout the United States and Canada. BravoTECH has twice been awarded the Inc. 5000 fastest company recognition. Their ability to find resources quickly and accurately is what has helped them achieve this enviable growth. Mr. Jackson earned a BS/BA from Illinois State University in 1980. In 2009, he was inducted into the ISU Business School’s Hall of Fame. Jackson is a recognized leader in the IT business community in Texas and beyond. He currently leads the initiative to develop Society for Information Management’s (SIM) new chapter in Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). Andrew is a past member of the SIM board, both nationally and of the DFW chapter. He is also the current chairman of the Executive Connections Tech SIG. Andrew is a past chairman of the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of the Texas Association of Business, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the National Kidney Foundation. Andrew received the Partners in Professionalism Award from the Association of Information Technology Professionals. He was honored as a Healthcare Hero by the Alliance for Healthcare Excellence; and was a nominee for the Metroplex Technology Business Council Tech Titans award.
