Vertically aligned single-crystalline Co5 Ge7 nanowire (NW) and nanobelt arrays are grown on a very thin graphite layer as well as a curved graphite layer with a good epitaxial lattice match. Co5 Ge7 NW arrays, thus grown, show very efficient field emission properties comparable to those of carbon nanotubes and may be used for flexible field emission displays in the future.

We investigated the effect of titanium (Ti)-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) theoretically and experimentally. We found that adsorption of single Ti atom lowers the work function of CNTs by density functional calculations. Also, Ti-coated CNTs showed the largest increase in local density of states around Fermi level under electric fields. Coating of Ti metal on CNTs was carried out by electroless plating method. Ti-coated CNTs were mixed with conductive pastes, and then screen-printed. The measurement of field emission carried out using a diode structure showed that the electron emission of Ti-coated CNT films uniformly had a field of 3.7 V/mum at a current density of 100 mu/cm2 (1/500 duty), as compare to bare CNT films showed a field of 5.5 V/mum. Furthermore, the lifetime of our CNT samples was about a few times as much as that of the pristine ones. Therefore, Ti-coated CNTs improved the characteristics of CNT-based field emission emitters

Field emission and lifetime characteristics of carbon nanotube paste including nitrogen foaming agent

Hee-Sung Moon; Jae-myung Kim; Seung-Joon Yoo

We added azodicarbamide (ADC) to protect carbon nanotube (CNT) paste from degradation. The agent produces nitrogen gas by heat at 190-210. Nitrogen (N/sub 2/) acts as the anti-oxidation gas for CNT. The measurement of field emission carried out using a diode structure showed that the electron emission of the agent-added CNT films uniformly had a field of 5.49 V//spl mu/m at a current density of 100 /spl mu/m/cm/sup 2/ (1/500 duty). Furthermore, the lifetime of CNT samples was about five times as much as that of the pristine ones.
