Jae Hyung Cho; Hyun Soo Kim; Hyung Rim Choi; Jae Un Jung

This study has tried to suggest a new model that can effectively redistribute the tickets in the online ticket resale market, while suggesting a new allocation mechanism based on an agent negotiation. To this end, this study has analyzed and simulated the secondary ticket market through System dynamics. As a result of these simulations, it has been proved that the price stability of ticket resale market leads to an increase in revenue. An agent negotiation helps to stabilize the ticket prices that are usually inclined to rise at auction, benefiting all the participants in the negotiations, consequently showing a Pareto solution.

Strategies for Improving the Profitability of a Korean Unit Train Operator: A System Dynamics Approach

Jae Un Jung; Hyun Soo Kim

A unit train (UT) has been developed primarily in countries that have wide or long territories, to move freight quickly over long distances. In South Korea, UTs have contributed to the facilitation of the overland export/import logistics for the last decade. However, UT operators in South Korea, which is a small country surrounded by North Korea and bodies of water, suffer from low profitability when competing with trucking companies because of diverse reasons that they cannot control. On this account, this research aims to develop business strategies for improving the profitability of a Korean UT operator. We analyzed both the revenues and expenses of a representative operator in Korea, and found simple but meaningful financial circular causality, using the system dynamics methodology. Thus, we presented and scientifically reinterpreted two strategies that might be acceptable alternatives: the internalization of shuttle carriers and the securing of more freight.

Jae Un Jung; Hyun Soo Kim

【Cloud computing(cloud) is a good candidate for complementing weaknesses of logistics information systems(heterogeneous processes not able to be standardized, geographically scattered and seamed connectivity, etc.) and for supporting innovative activities of logistics. In this sense, we aimed to study deployment strategies of clouds specified in the logistics industry. To achieve our research goal, we reviewed up-to-date logistics clouds researches and analysis of clouds; platforms and deployment strategies for logistics. This study contributes to follow-up researches for establishing a development direction of logistics specific clouds and developing more concrete clouds for logistics.】

Patent Trend Mining for Internet of Things in Logistics

Jae Un Jung; Hyun Soo Kim; Hyung Rim Choi

The philosophy of the internet of things (IoT) provides an ideal environment for the logistics industry, which seeks the seamless integration and management of physically scattered logistics assets (freight, facilities, equipment, etc.). The great attention to IoT in the field of logistics stimulates the development of relevant technologies, leading to a high rate of patent applications. Our research aims to trace patent trends in IoT for the field of logistics by utilizing patent information. We analyzed International Patent Classification (IPC) codes and abstracts of patent documents using text mining techniques. Our results indicate that technologies for the IoT are in the early stages of being applied to the logistics industry and are in the process of being integrated with cloud computing and big data technologies.

Jae Un Jung; Moo Hong Kang; Hyung Rim Choi; Hyun Soo Kim; Byung Joo Park; Chang Hyun Park

Many researches have been made in order to solve global logistic problems, and especially in case of maritime transportation, much more studies have been made compared with other transportation fields because of its weight in terms of international logistics. However, little study has been made on the car carrier’s transportation, due to its relatively small weight in the maritime transportation market. For this reason, this study has tried to develop an algorithm for the maritime transportation planning of car carriers, so that they can not only reduce logistics costs but also improve competitiveness. Car carriers are usually depending upon manual work, and concerning the routing of car carriers, however, many changes are frequently taking place in the car production schedule and ship’s arrival schedule. Because of this, this study has developed a genetic algorithm for car carrier’s routing so as to make an optimal transportation planning with minimum costs. The genetic algorithm in this study has been compared with the solution results of integer programming in an effort to test its performance.

Reducing Subjectivity in the System Dynamics Modeling Process: An Interdisciplinary Approach

Jae Un Jung

Over the last six decades, the system dynamics (SD) methodology has been used to address a variety of issues that are inherent to complex systems. In the SD methodology, circular-causality-centric problem definitions and computer simulations are uniquely applied to narrow the scope of a problem and facilitate an understanding of the diverse phenomena that arise from the underlying problem structure. With unclear but conceivable causality between the variables that constitute a problem, intentionally choosing to focus on the circular causality (causal loop) may result in erroneous models. The SD modeling tools, causal loop diagram for mental modeling, and stocks-and-flows diagram for physical simulation modeling are all interconnected, and it is therefore important to maintain consistency between their outputs to ensure the procedural validity. However, the modeling activities are normally performed individually, which introduces ambiguity and subjectivity into the SD modeling process. To address this issue, this research presents an integrated SD modeling support system that employs graph theory, text mining, and social network analysis approaches, and can be used as an extended SD modeling framework. This system is expected to facilitate SD modeling and to reduce errors in the SD modeling process. In the future, it will be utilized to implement an advanced computer-aided SD modeling toolchain and methodology.

An Improvement of Shipping Schedule Services: Focusing on Service Provider a in Korea

Jae Un Jung; Hyun Soo Kim; Hyung Rim Choi; Chang Hyun Park

In the shipping industry, there are commercial information providers who collect and advertise shipping schedules by global region between merchant shippers to attract cargo and forwarders to find tonnage. The service providers perform most jobs for data (shipping schedules) gathering and processing by hand. In addition, they are also challenged to extend the range of schedule collection and provision to both on- and off-line sites in terms of service quality and diversity. For these issues, we carried out a project to improve the existing business process of the service provider A (fictitious name) in Korea. Our research case introduces a significant commercial information service specialized in the shipping and logistics industries which is ordinary in the field but new in the realm of research. Also compared to the previous process, we found that our applications developed by the existing S/W technology improved the work efficiency by 25% and diversified revenue models with stability.

Big Data Governance for Smart Logistics: A Value-Added Perspective

Jae Un Jung; Hyun Soo Kim

For the last five years, worldwide curiosity concerning big data has sharply increased, along with cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, without reasonable governance of the role of and value-sharing among stakeholders, it is difficult to recognize big data’s potential value, beyond the raw data. This research suggests refinements to this governance, in terms of cross-sector collaboration for the benefit of all. This is particularly true for those in the logistics sector, which is one of the most promising, although it is composed of complicated and exclusive industries. For the development/evaluation of such governance, we designed a new business model that governs stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and presented a case study on shipping reefer (refrigerated) containers. We found that our model is applicable to both the private and public sectors for smart logistics, and feasible for resolving conventional logistical challenges such as security, smuggling, and indemnification disputes.

The problems of dispatch planning for container truck are classified as the pickup and delivery problems, which are highly complex issues that consider various constraints in the real world. However, in case of the current situation, it is developed by the control system so that it requires the automated planning system under the view of nationwide integrative planning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest model to develop the automated dispatch system through the constraint satisfaction problem and meta-heuristic technique-based algorithm. In the further study, the practical system is developed and evaluation is performed in aspect of various results. This study suggests model to undergo the study which promoted the complexity of the problems by considering the various constraints which were not considered in the early study. However, it is suggested that it is necessary to add the study which includes the real-time monitoring function for vehicles and cargos based on the information technology.
