The Occurrence of Oxycarenus hyalinipennis (Costa) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) in the West Indies and New Lygaeidae Records for the Turks and Caicos Islands of Providenciales and North Caicos

James A. Slater; Richard M. Baranowski

A breeding population of Oxycarenus hyalinipennis (Costa) is reported for the first time from the West Indies. Its distribution is discussed and information to distinguish it from other closely related species is given. Several additional lygaeids are reported for the first time from the islands of North Caicos and Providenciales.

Revision of Laryngodus Herrich-Schaeffer, an Allocasuarina feeder, with comments on its biology and the classification of the family (Heteroptera : Lygaeoidea : Rhyparochromidae)

James A. Slater; Randall T. Schuh; Gerasimos Cassis; Christine A. Johnson; Paola. Pedraza-Peñalosa

Laryngodus Herrich-Schaeffer, 1850, is redescribed, including, for the first time, nymphal morphology. Three species are recognised based on qualitative morphology, a principle components analysis of morphometric data, and the study of sequence data from the mitochondrial genes COI and 16S. They are: L. australiae Herrich-Schaeffer from the south-western coastal area of Western Australia, L. cervantes, sp. nov., from southern Western Australia, and L. luteomaculatus, sp. nov., from western Victoria and adjacent South Australia. Sexual dimorphism in all species and variation in males of L. luteomaculatus, sp. nov. is documented and discussed. All species and their hosts are illustrated with colour digital images; scanning electron micrographs are used to illustrate male prosternal spines, antennnae, abdominal trichobothria, and other structures. Male genitalic morphology is illustrated with line drawings. Authoritative host identifications indicate that Laryngodus is restricted to feeding on several species of Allocasuarina (Casuarinaceae); nymphs and adults are known to live on the plants and to be strongly associated with the cone-like fruits. The tribal placement of Laryngodus is discussed.

A revision of the lygaeid genus Pseudopachybrachius (Hemiptera)

Le-Yi Zheng; James A. Slater

Abstract. The rhyparochromine lygaeid genus Pseudopachybrachius is revised. Four species are recognized in the perplexing vinctus‐gvoup (viz capicola, reductus, vinctus and guttus) based on the genitalia details and external features. One new species, P.concepcioni sp.nov., is described from the West Indies and South America. New distributional records are given for all species. Pamera dubia Reuter 1882 is synonymized with Pseudopachybrachius reductus (Walker, 1872) and a neotype is designated for Rhyparochromus inconspicuus Dallas, 1852. A key and diagnostic characters of seven species are given. Phylogenetic and zoogeographic relationships are discussed. Illustrations of the genitalia, a cladogram and diagnostic external features are included.

The lygaeidae of the Cayman Islands with the description of a new species of ochrimnus (Hemiptera)

Richard M. Baranowski; James A. Slater

A key to the 50 species known from the Cayman Islands is provided, brief descriptions are given and the origin and relationships of the lygaeid fauna are discussed. A new species is described and new synonymy is presented.

Systematic relationships of the Antillocorini of the Western Hemisphere (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae)

James A. Slater

Abstract. The status of the tribe Antillocorini as it occurs in the Western Hemisphere is discussed. An evaluation of characters useful in systematic analysis is included together with an evaluation of the plesiomorphic and apomorphic character states. The phylogenetic relationships of the genera are discussed and a cladogram included. A key is given to all known genera found in the Western Hemisphere. The following new taxa are described: Paradema gen.n.; Paradema bathydemoides sp.n. (Venezuela), P.engiernani sp.n. (Panama), P.longisetosa sp.n. (Argentina), P.oculata sp.n. (Coiumbia, Guyane) (type‐species), P.pameroides sp.n. (Brazil), Caeneusia obrienorum sp.n. (Peru), Antillodema gen.n. (to include Antillocoris obscurus Barber comb.n. (type‐species) and Bathydema maculosa Slater and Baranowski comb.n.), Paurocoris gen.n., P.yvgodzinskyi sp.n. (type‐species) (Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela), P.punctata (Distant) transferred to Paurocoris from Bathydema, Trachinocoris gen.n., T.crassus sp.n. (Brazil), Terenocoris gen.n., T.nitidus sp.n. (Peru).

A Review of the Genus Cistalia Stal

James A. Slater; Richard M. Baranowski

A key to the 5 species of Cistalia Stal (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) is presented. Cistalia signoreti Guerin, previously known only from Cuba, is recorded from Florida, U.S.A. and is also widely distributed in South America. C. binotata n. sp. and C. neotropicalis n. sp. are described.

A New Species of Bromeliad Lygaeid from Jamaica

James A. Slater; Richard M. Baranowski

A new species of Ozophora from Jamaica, West Indies is described and figured. The immature stages are also described. This species appears to be restricted to mature seed heads of bromeliads in the genus Hohenbergia. This restricted habitat is unusual since most species in the Rhyparochrominae are litter insects that feed upon fallen seeds on the ground.

A New Genus and Species of Turtle Bug from Southern Florida (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)

James A. Slater; Richard M. Baranowski

A new genus and species (Neapodops floridanus) of turtle bug are described from Everglades National Park, Florida.

Three New Species of Rhyparochromine Lygaeidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) from Hispaniola

James A. Slater; Richard M. Baranowski

Three new species of rhyparochromine Lygaeidae, of the tribe Myodochini, Heraeus caliginosus New Species, Heraeus concolor New Species, and Catenes spiculus New Species from Hispaniola are described. H. caliginosus and C. spiculus are figured. Catenes Distant has previously been known only from a single Central American species.

Revision of the genus Stigmatonotum Lindberg (Hemiptera Lygaeidae)

James A. Slater; Le-Yi Zheng

The genus Stigmatonotum is redescribed, an analysis of important taxonomic and phylogenetic characters given and a key to species included. All species are diagnosed or described. Two new species are described, S. elongatum (Tanzania, Natal) and S. attenuatum (Ghana). S. carinatum Linnavuori is synonymized with S. afra StAl. Plociomera japonica Distant and S. minutum Malipatil are synonymized with S. geniculatum (Motschulsky). Linnavuoris record of S. capucinum and Hsiao et al.s of S. rufipes are referred to S. geniculatum. Lectotypes are selected for S. rufipes and S. geniculatum. Humilocoris Harrington is noted as having an erroneous type species. The status of the genus relative to Stigmatonotum is discussed. The third, fourth, and fifth instars of S. capucinum are described. Habitat notes are included for several species and general distributional data given for all species. There is a discussion of plesiomorphic and apomorphic character states. A cladogram is provided.
