Improved Performance of All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Nanosilicon Active Material with Multiwalled-Carbon-Nanotubes as a Conductive Additive

Multiwalled-carbon-nanotubes (MWCNTs) are studied as a conductive additive for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries using a silicon nanoparticle electrode. Lithium batteries with nanosilicon (n-Si) electrodes and MWCNTs demonstrate nearly a 100% increase in long-term specific capacity over comparable batteries that instead employ acetylene black. For over 100 cycles, reversible capacities over 900 mAh g -1 are measured for these n-Si/MWCNT electrodes. MWCNTs are shown to be a superior conducting additive for Li batteries with a solid-state construction, and Si nanoparticles are shown to demonstrate improved reversible cycling over bulk Si anode material.

Li2S-P2S5 Based Solid State Electrolytes for Lithium Ion Battery Applications

Solid-state electrolytes to replace liquid electrolytes for lithium ion batteries have many advantages. Batteries using a solid state electrolyte are safer to use, do not leak hazardous liquid electrolyte, have a wide selection of compositions, can vary in form design, and have high reliability. A superior solid electrolyte with high ambient temperature conductivity comparable to that of a liquid electrolyte would pave the path for commercial use of solid-state batteries.
