Die Motivation zur Elternschaft. Unterschiede zwischen Männern und Frauen

Obwohl sich sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien generativen Handelns von Beginn an auf Entscheidungsrationalitaten mit Paar- oder Haushaltsbezug beziehen, wurde das Geburtenverhalten nur selten im Kontext von Partnerschaften untersucht. Zudem fuhrte die traditionelle Fokussierung der demographischen Fertilitatsforschung auf Frauen dazu, dass vor allem die Motivation zur Elternschaft von Frauen thematisiert und erforscht wurde, wahrend hingegen nur wenige Anhaltspunkte uber die relevanten Motive der Manner existieren.

Relationship status and health: Does the use of different relationship indicators matter?

Studies that analyse the association between relationship status and health usually disregard non-marital relationships. The present study examines if the use of different relationship indicators leads to different associations between relationship status and physical and mental health. The database used for this analysis is the Survey of Health and Ageing in Europe, a large population-based survey of Europeans aged 50 and over and their cohabitants. This study combines cross-sectional and retrospective data of 13 European countries. The sample size is 9298 men and 11,631 women for grip strength and 9609 men and 12,333 women for depression. Generalised estimating equations are used. For men, the goodness-of-fit measure quasi-likelihood under the independence model criterion indicates that marital status is a better predictor than cohabitation status or partnership status for predicting grip strength. However, for grip strength of women, there are only small differences in the model fit between the different relationship indicators. For both men and women, the partnership status (marriage, cohabitation or dating relationship) shows the best model fit for explaining depression. The results suggest that future health research could benefit from the use of relationship indicators other than marital status, particularly regarding mental health.

Der sozialstrukturelle Kontext der zunehmenden Partnerlosigkeit in Deutschland The Structural Contexts of Increasing Singleness in Germany

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand des Beitrags sind die sozialstrukturellen Rahmenbedingungen der zunehmenden Partnerlosigkeit in Deutschland. Der Beitrag umfasst eine Zusammenstellung und theoretische Diskussion von Forschungsthesen, deskriptive Betrachtungen zur Entwicklung der Partnerlosigkeit in den letzten Jahrzehnten sowie Analysen zu den sozialstrukturellen Korrelaten von Partnerlosigkeit und ihrer jeweiligen Bedeutung für deren gegenwärtige Zunahme. Die Resultate lassen darauf schließen, dass sich die Zunahme der Partnerlosigkeit auf veränderte Partnermarktbedingungen, auf die steigende Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen, auf gestiegene Arbeitslosigkeitsrisiken und abnehmende Beschäftigungsstabilität zurückführen lässt. Datengrundlage der Analysen ist das Sozio-oekonomische Panel (SOEP). Summary This article investigates structural factors in the rising share of singles among women and men in Germany. It contains a synopsis of theses and theoretical discussions, a description of the increase in singles, an exploration of structural effects on the risks of being without a partner, as well as investigations into whether increasing risks of singleness are linked to shifts in social structure. Results indicate that the rise in singleness partially depends on shortages in the market for partners, the increase in female labor participation, rising unemployment, and increasing occupational uncertainty. The study is based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Survey (GSOEP).

Migration and the Partner Market: How Gender-Selective Relocations Affect Regional Mating Chances in Germany

The study explores the consequences of gender-selective internal migration for regional mating chances in Germany, comparing different cohorts as well as different types of regions. Indicators of the partner market based on time series of the official German regional population statistics are combined with indicators of migration and on regional economic, educational, and settlement structures. Instead of the simple sex ratio, which is the standard measure for partner market conditions in previous research, the study at hand uses the availability ratio suggested by Goldman et al. (Popul Index 50(1):5–25, 1984). The availability ratio takes into account that partner markets are structured by age preferences. Like previous studies, results show that gender-selective migration has led to a strong deterioration of mating chances for men in most eastern districts of Germany. Exceptions are districts offering universities as well as a large tertiary sector. But, unlike previous research, results also show that migration-caused imbalances of the partner market in eastern German districts are not extraordinarily high. In the western part of Germany, there were at times even stronger partner market imbalances for some male cohorts as a consequence of oscillating birth rates.

Den Gelegenheiten und Restriktionen des Partnermarkts werden in unterschiedlichen Theorietraditionen starke Einflusse auf die Moglichkeiten der Partnerwahl zugeschrieben (Blau et al. 1982; Blau und Schwartz 1984; Klein 2000). Insbesondere beeintrachtigt ein numerisch unausgewogener Partnermarkt – also ein Frauenbzw. Manneruber hang – die Chance des in Uberzahl befindlichen Geschlechts, im betreffenden Gebiet uberhaupt einen Partner zu finden (Klein 1993,1995).

Does Poverty Increase the Risk of Social Isolation? Insights Based on Panel Data from Germany

ABSTRACT Sociological literature suggests a causal effect of poverty on the risk of social isolation. While previous research on this link is only based on cross-sectional data, this article presents more valid evidence for this assumption by applying fixed-effects regression methods and panel data (German Socio-economic Panel). First, the study shows that the poverty effect on isolation occurs regardless of time-constant unobserved heterogeneity. Second, it examines whether poverty and isolation are correlated because of a mutual association with critical life events (health deterioration, dissolutions of couple relationships, and job loss) that may increase both the risk for poverty and the risk for isolation. Regarding men, the effect of isolation on poverty is not attributable to the cited biographical transitions. Regarding women, it is only in part—but not in whole—attributable to dissolutions of couple relationships.

Der Aufsatz gibt einen Uberblick uber den gegenwartigen Forschungsstand im Themenfeld der Partnerlosigkeit und der Partnerbindung. Behandelt werden der sozialwissenschaftliche Diskurs um den Themenbereich der Partnerlosigkeit, die Verbreitung von Paarbeziehungen in Deutschland und um deren Entwicklung in den letzten Jahrzehnten, der hierfur ausschlaggebende Prozess der Verkurzung von Paarbeziehungen, zentrale Einfl ussfaktoren der Bindungschancen, die Beziehungschancen im hoheren Lebensalter sowie die Verbreitung und Entwicklung der Partnerlosigkeit im internationalen Vergleich.

Die vorliegende Festschrift ist Thomas Klein zu seinem 60. Geburtstag gewidmet, den er am 20. September 2015 begeht. Thomas Klein sieht dabei auf ein umfangreiches Werk zuruck, in dem er Themen der Sozialstrukturanalyse, der Familiensoziologie, der Gesundheitssoziologie und der Alternsforschung miteinander vereint.
