Experimental measurements of multi-carrier power line communication systems

Jan Slacik; Petr Mlynek; Radek Fujdiak; Katerina Dobesova

The article focuses on experimental measurement of multi-carrier narrowband Power Line Communication. The aim of experimental measurements was comparison of multi-carrier narrowband Power Line Communication from the view-point of possible communication distance, available data rate and impact of noise. The specifications G3-PLC and PRIME are considered. The field test results and data rate measurements are presented for different scenarios. They demonstrate consequences of noisy environment and complicated topology. Finally, the article identifies and analysis the fundamental issues for further development of PLC for Smart Grids and Smart Metering.

Experimental measurements of noise influence on narrowband Power Line Communication

Petr Mlynek; Radek Fujdiak; Jiri Misurec; Jan Slacik

The key to the Smart Grid vision are the communication networks, which serve as the fundamental information infrastructure to provide bidirectional end-to-end data communication in the Smart Grid. To enable this bidirectional end-to-end data communication, narrowband power line communication (PLC) systems are attractive because they can be deployed over existing outdoor power lines. The paper describes PLC technologies, especially narrowband PLC technology. The recent advances in power line noise characterization, measurements and modelling were analysed. Based on this analysis, the experimental measurements of power line noise influence in 3-500 kHz range were identified as a challenging problem and yet seldom reported. Therefore, the paper describes the experimental measurements and the influence of particular noises on the narrowband PLC communication. Based on noise analysis and measurement results, adaptive communication approaches was discussed and a method for managing the power line topology and noise analysis is proposed.

Efficiency evaluation for different kind of localization methods for android devices

Radek Fujdiak; Petr Mlynek; Jiri Misurec; Jan Slacik; J. Brychta

The new technological approaches in the last several years bring new possibilities for many different areas, i.e. localisation. The localisation was many years used only for outdoor purposes such as navigation. However, we start to use it also for optimisation methods, staff efficiency evaluation, industrial management and many other areas. Therefore, the indoor localisation starts to take a significant part in these areas. This paper provides evaluation measurements of different localisation techniques for outdoor as well as for indoor (Wi-Fi, cellular and GPS). We use the standard android device (Smartphone) for evaluating these techniques in accuracy, speed and others. This allows a basic evaluation of these methods, which might be used for future development of optimal indoor and outdoor localisation methods. We show that more complex applications demand much more complex system for localisation as i.e. combination of above-mentioned techniques.
