Radio resource control for GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN)-inter radio access technology and inter-mode procedures

Iuliana Virtej; Shkumbin Hamiti; Timo Rantalainen; Janne Parantainen; Guillaume Sebire; Eero Nikula

The 3GPP Release 5 will specify a GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) which can connect to 3G mobile core network (CN) through the Iu interface. The new architecture implies significant modifications to the GERAN radio protocols. This paper focuses on radio resource control (RRC) procedures, especially on the new defined inter radio access technology procedures between GERAN Iu mode and UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) or inter-mode procedures between GERAN Iu mode to GERAN A/Gb mode in Release 5.

Business transformation of the provisioning process for Machine-to-Machine

Harald Bender; Mikko Kolehmainen; Gerald Lehmann; Janne Parantainen; Markus Staufer; Marcos Tong

With a very wide variety of potential applications, the market for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) connectivity - sometimes referred to as Embedded Mobile (EM) - is one of the main growth areas in telecommunications and associated vertical industries. There are several major differences between the embedded domain and traditional subscriber-centric mobile communications. Chief among these is the way in which embedded services are provisioned (the process of connecting EM devices to wide-area wireless networks) and the life-cycle management of embedded mobiles. This paper summarizes the results of a project by Nokia Siemens Networks and the GSMA (GSM Association: association of mobile operators) designed to identify how mobile operators need to transform the provisioning process to serve the emerging embedded mobile market. The project used the Nokia Siemens Networks Service Provider Enterprise Architecture Vision (SEAV) methodology to map out the existing provisioning landscape and transformational requirements. SEAV, which is based on the generic Enterprise Architecture methodology, was developed by Nokia Siemens Networks as part of a research project.

Enterprise Architecture for Addressing Business Transformation Challenges: The Case of Embedded Mobile Provisioning Process in the Telecommunications Industry

Marcos Tong; Harald Bender; Mikko Kolehmainen; Janne Parantainen; Gerald Lehmann

The present is a report of an exploratory case study about using an Enterprise Architecture method for addressing the business transformation challenges of embedded mobile provisioning in the telecommunications industry. The study focused on the analysis of the provisioning process for gathering transformation requirements, translating them into business objectives and deriving a set of strategic initiatives. In addition, it explored the construction and usefulness of visual representations of the vision and strategy. The results show that such formal method is perceived useful for defining the transformation strategy.
