Geographical information systems applied in the field of renewable energy sources

Javier Salido Domínguez; Julio Amador

This article presents a synthetic vision of geographical information systems (GIS) applications that are state of the art in the renewable energy field. The objective is to analyze the main qualities and problems of these applications, focusing on specific samples, and to carry out a methodological proposal in this genre. From this point of view, the study synthesizes the analyzed applications in three big groups: Decisions Support Systems (DSS) based on GIS; renewable energy and distributed generation of electricity; and decentralized generation for the rural electrification. In addition, a synthetic table and bibliographical references is provided for each group. Finally, several conclusions and a methodological outline are contributed for GIS application in the rural electrification with renewable energy.

Material constructivo latericio procedente del campamento de la Legio VII Gemina en León. La intervención arqueológica de Puerta Obispo

Angel Morillo Cerdán; Javier Salido Domínguez

A large quantity of Roman bricks and tiles were recovered in 1996 during the excavations in Puerta Obispo (Leon), near the eastern gate of the Roman military fortress of the legio VII gemina. A great part of this material (bricks, bessales, pedales, concamerationes) belonged to the legionary baths, located under the current gothic cathedral. These archaeological excavations have also unearthed roof tiles (tegulae, imbrices) that were originally part of the porta principalis sinistra, the main gate on the eastern side of the fortress, during the late 3rd century AC. In this paper we also review the stamped bricks and tiles, which constitute most of the material found found in Puerta Obispo. In addition to the repertoire of military stamps of the legio VII gemina, we analyze the production marks, numbers, shoe prints and traces of animals, which give important information about production and daily life in the legionary camp.

Assessment of Solar Electrification in Cuba: A Case Study Based on Gis for Rural Development

Irene Pinedo; Javier Salido Domínguez; Maria Rodriguez

A quarter of total world population, mainly in developing countries, are lacking of electricity. Due to social, economic and geographical differences, detail studies are needed in order to find the appropriate technology for each case. The rural electrification analysis of Guama municipality is based on the use of Geographical Information System (GIS) to define the best way of electrification using levelized electric cost (LEC) criterion to meet a particular demand. Applying SOLARGIS methodology, conventional and renewable energy technologies are compared in every non-electrified community. The analysis considers the social and geographical particularities of the area and shows a very high potential of remote sites to be electrified by means of photovoltaic systems.
