A call to Civil Society

Jean Bethke Elshtain

W ~ come together as citizens of diverse beliefs nd differing political affiliations to issue an appeal for the renewal of the American experiment in selfgovernance. We come together as Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, agreeing to put aside partisan political disputes in order to rediscover our primary institutions and shared civic story. We come together as people of various ethical and faith traditions, agreeing to set aside theological differences in order to rediscover the public moral philosophy that makes our democracy possible. What is the state of our union? Certainly there is much good news. America is the longest-lasting constitutional republic in history. Across the planet, opponents of freedom are on the defensive, as the American idea increasingly becomes the worlds idea. Today the United States is not only the worlds outstanding superpower, but more importantly, the worlds great exemplar of democratic civil society.

On beautiful souls, just warriors and feminist consciousness

Jean Bethke Elshtain

Abstract The author sketches, evaluates, and aims to disenthrall feminist thinkers from the grip of two powerfully and deeply held archetypes, the Beautiful Soul and the Just Warrior. Both these positions, with their many historic variants, operate to forestall consideration of possible alternatives on matters of war and peace, for feminists and non-feminists alike. The postures gear thinking a certain direction on the question of war itself and on the problem of male and female involvement in war. After criticizing these received notions, and explaining why each is inadequate to our current historic needs, the author develops a perspective, maternal thinking, which, transformed by and infused with a particular mode of feminist consciousness can, she argues, help to place contemporary feminists in a powerful theiretical posture from which to challenge the militarist state and militaristic policies and thinking.

Women and War : ten years on

Jean Bethke Elshtain

The questions with which I began and ended Women and War remain: How might we locate ourselves in order to create space for a less rigid play of individual and civic identities and virtues than those we have thus far known? What alternatives of citizenship can we draw upon? What perspectives within our reach offer hope for sustaining an ethos that extends the prospect of limiting force and the threat of force? In the book, I recommend a form of civic membership that cannot and does not place duty and loyalty to ones particular political body above all else; nevertheless, one that honours and gives ethical and civic weight precisely to that form of membership. I called this civic character a ‘chastened patriot’, one who is critical of the excesses of nationalism and critical, as well, of feminist arguments that express contempt for forms of identity as these are embodied in loyalties to ways of life shared by men and women. At the same time, this civic paragon of mine is also critical of those who defend particular ways of life in a way that generates contempt for the universalistic features of feminist concerns for the dignity and rights of woman. The ‘chastened patriot’ is one who understands and honours both universalistic and particularistic commitments, one for whom neither automatically trumps the other.

The Social Relations of the Classroom: A Moral and Political Perspective

Jean Bethke Elshtain

Much of the continuing debate over radical teaching focuses on issues of pedagogical method or “technique.” Non-traditional teachers ask themselves: Is it possible to break down “artificial” and destructive relationships of dominance and submission within my classroom? Can I assist students in an effort to cast off passive modes they have internalized as a result of years of socialization into deference towards authority? Shall I attempt to reorder dynamics in my classroom in order to undo the damage done to students within hierarchically structured classes? Can I engender and sustain a sense of “community” within my classroom? These imperatives are felt by all radical teachers but most particularly by those who identify themselves as feminists; indeed, “hierarchical,” so-called “traditional, male-dominant” classrooms are frequently castigated as constituent features of a repudiated male approach to teaching and learning, a mode linked to blustering and authoritarian displays of power.

Why science cannot stand alone

Jean Bethke Elshtain

In an era in which certain arenas of scientific research have become increasingly controversial, this article critically evaluates what it means to “believe in science.” Many scientists today seem to claim a sovereign right to no political interference under the rubric of freedom. This article questions such a notion, and explores the dominance of science and the silencing of moral voices by undertaking two brief investigations—the first into National Socialist Germany, which insisted that it was defined by “applied biology,” and the second into the world of contemporary American biomedicine. When all ethical barriers are eradicated, it seems that a will to power takes over—manifested in Nazi Germany’s vaunted scientific autonomy. In light of these sobering historical examples, this article reminds the reader that members of the public, including physicians, rightly deliberate about how to conscientiously order their lives together, and that part of that instrinsically political deliberation is to set limits to the ways medical science is applied and what scientists may do in pursuit of their goals.

Terrorism, Regime Change, and Just War: Reflections on Michael Walzer

Jean Bethke Elshtain

Abstract This article explores the ethics of terrorism and its relation to the problem of regime change. It begins by broadly endorsing Michael Walzers assessment of terrorism in Just and Unjust Wars and, more recently, Arguing About War, arguing that because terrorism involves the deliberate killing of noncombatants, it is not just morally problematic, but beyond the pale of just war thinking. Indeed, in its very randomness, terrorism rejects the very idea of ethics and violates all codes, laws, and traditions that attempt to limit violent conduct. The final part of the paper turns to the question of regime change and suggests that tyrannical regimes, like terrorists, reject the very idea of ethical limits. The article ends by endorsing the ‘responsibility to protect’ and suggesting that criminal or rogue states ought to lose their sovereign rights to non-intervention.Abstract This article explores the ethics of terrorism and its relation to the problem of regime change. Ethics in the Women's Movement

Jean Bethke Elshtain

Feminism without ethics is inconceivable. Each feminist position makes contact with previous politico-ethical systems, sometimes extending, sometimes repudiating features of those systems. In this article, the author elaborates the relationship between feminism in its radical, liberal, Marxist or socialist, and ecological varieties and various political and ethical positions on some of the most highly charged issues of the day. Her aim is to show that feminism cannot escape exuding ethical assumptions and implications and that feminists can and should be held accountable for the stances their own positions either underwrite or repudiate. In this matter, at least, Jean-Jacques Rousseau was right when he insisted that “those who would separate politics from morals must fail to understand both.”
