Noise reduction of a double-skin façade considering opening for natural ventilation

Jean-Philippe Migneron; André Potvin

The growing interest in natural or hybrid ventilation systems brings a challenge for good integration of openings in building facades. With a noisy environment, there is an important limitation for the use of direct openings in common building envelopes. As a part of a research project dedicated to this problem, it is possible to evaluate the impact of several double-skin configurations, modifying openings, space between facades or the choice of construction assemblies. Experimental measurements made in laboratory conditions lead to the estimation of usual noise reduction and sound transmission class. Moreover, the airflow at constant differential pressure was assessed as functions of the aperture and compared to sound insulation. Analyzing those parameters together give useful information for the design of passive ventilation with a significant airflow when acoustical performance is an important issue.

Noise insulation of a curtain wall for natural ventilation

Jean-Philippe Migneron; André Potvin; Jean-Gabriel Migneron

The growing interest in natural or hybrid ventilation systems brings a challenge for good integration of openings in building facades. In a noisy environment, there is a major limitation for the use of direct openings in common building envelopes. As a part of a research project dedicated to this problem, it is possible to evaluate the impact of a curtain wall that could be added to get a double skin facade. Experimental measurements made in laboratory conditions lead to the estimation of usual noise reduction and sound transmission class. The airflow at constant differential pressure was assessed as a function of the aperture and compared to sound insulation. Analyzing those parameters together give useful information for the design of passive ventilation with a significant airflow when acoustic performance is an important issue. This paper aims to detail performances of common curtain wall assemblies.

Global understanding of important parameters for improvement of impact insulation

Jean-Philippe Migneron; Jean-Gabriel Migneron

Floors impact insulation performances can be very different from one assembly to another. Many years of research and development have been done in this area. Now, it seems that a new solution or another product is commercialized every week. From buyers’ point of view, there is a need to decide which topping and underlay will suit some noise requirement to the lowest cost. However, acousticians and specialists in noise control might consider a more complex problem, especially in multi-family dwellings. In lightweight construction, the relation between the floor and the ceiling underneath also affect the overall performance in terms of IIC, or even in risk of complaints. Knowing that it is often difficult to compare a real situation to a datasheet from a manufacturer or to building codes, few key ideas should be remembered. This paper aims to briefly review some conclusions of previous works done in impact sound insulation and to analyze how fundamental parameters can be applied to real installations. An ex...

Objective and subjective analysis of acoustical response in newly renovated Palais Moncalm, Quebec City, Canada

Jean-Philippe Migneron; Jean-Gabriel Migneron; Jean‐François Hardy

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Palais Montcalm, the building has been almost entirely rebuilt to convert it into the House of Music. The main room, named Salle Raoul‐Jobin, has been designed specifically for the resident chamber orchestra: Les Violons du Roy. Collaboration between acoustical consultant, Larry S. King, and architect Jacques Plante of MUSE consortium results in a 979 seats concert hall with variable acoustic to accommodate different kinds of musical events. Since reopening in March 2007, the general acoustic has been enthusiastically acclaimed by professionals, by world known musicians, and by the public. The principal objective of this study is to characterize acoustical response of the room with various adjustments of wall curtains and motorized canopy. This important reflective area is software‐controlled in a range of 3 meters depending on musical needs. Acoustical objective parameters, such as reverberation time, early decay time, impulse response or C80 factor will be analyzed a...
